Sony premiered the trailer for Kraven the Hunter during their panel at CinemaCon 2023. An audience of Hollywood studio and movie theater owners were treated to an exclusive clip of the film, which is set to be released later this year.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who plays the titular character, introduced the movie via a video and also dropped some major news – Kraven the Hunter will be Sony’s first R-rated Marvel movie. He said:
“Will it be rated-R? F*ck yes, it will be rated R.”
Aaron’s video was followed by a clip of the legendary villain Sergei Kravinoff unleashing himself on his foes. The trailer, which will be released to the public later this year, truly cemented the movie’s R rating. Amongst other things, it included Taylor-Johnson, in Kraven’s iconic fur costume, biting “a dude’s nose off” and spitting it at the camera.

CinemaCon took all measures to ensure the trailer wasn’t leaked, so no clips from the event are available online. However, Comicbook.com was in attendance at the event and published an exclusive description of the trailer for Kraven the Hunter:
“In the footage, brutal Kraven slaughters men in a truck, including biting chunks of their faces off and tossing them out of his mouth towards the camera. He pulls hjs classic lion costume out, showing its mane. He fights many man, slaughtering them in a bloody series of events. In the woods, men look for Kraven and set traps, but Kraven uses the locale to his advantage and wrecks them.”
The description further reads:
“In the film, Kraven seems to be setting out to be nothing like his father, uses spears to kill men, slaughters another in an office with a crossbow, and moves like an animal through hallways – sometimes on all fours. It’s a bloody romp, loaded with a couple of f-bombs. The Rhino is the villain of the film, with a tease showing a man’s arm transforming into the character.”
Sony’s Kraven the Hunter will be released this October
Kraven the Hunter will be theatrically released on October 6, 2023, but plot details are being kept under wraps. This will be Kraven’s first appearance on the silver screen, as he has not been featured in any Spider-man movies previously.
While this will be Sergei Kravinoff’s cinematic debut, it is not Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s first Marvel stint. He has previously appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron as Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver, who was turned into an “Enhanced” by HYDRA.
Apart from Taylor-Johnson, Kraven the Hunter features:
- Ariana DeBose as Calypso, a voodoo priestess and Kraven’s on-and-off lover
- Christopher Abbott reportedly as the Foreigner, the main antagonist
- Alessandro Nivola in an undisclosed role, reportedly an antagonist
- Fred Hechinger reportedly as Dmitri Smerdyakov aka Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother
- Russell Crowe reportedly as Nikolai Kravinoff, Kraven’s father
- Levi Miller in an undisclosed role
Who is Sergei Kravinoff?
Sergei Kravinoff aka Kraven is a big-game hunter who was first seen in The Amazing Spider-Man comic #15 in August 1964, created by created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Though he has faced other Marvel superheroes such as Black Panther, Kraven is one of Spider-man’s most formidable enemies, and his ultimate goal is to kill the web-slinger so he can prove himself to be the greatest hunter in the world.
Sergei’s story begins as the son of a Russian aristocrat who fled to the US. However, he gives himself superhuman abilities by regularly consuming Calypso’s herbal potion, which enhances his physical strength to match those of a jungle cat. He thus prefers taking his enemies down with his bare hands rather than using bows and arrows, a habit that was reportedly featured in Kraven the Hunter‘s trailer with Taylor-Johnson walking on all fours.
He successfully achieved his target in 1987’s Fearful Symmetry: Kraven’s Last Hunt by J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck, as he buried Spider-man alive and assumed his identity.
Kraven will likely be seen in more movies after the 2023 release. While announcing Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s casting in May 2021, Sony had revealed that they signed a multi-picture deal with the actor.
