Developers of Persona 3, 4, and 5, Atlus, revealed a trailer of a brand new action-adventure RPG during The Game Awards 2023. The game, known as Metaphor ReFantazio is being developed by Atlus along with Studio Zero & published by SEGA and is slated for release in the Fall 2024.
The trailer for Metaphor ReFantazio features a blend of the game’s narrative, intermingled with fascinating shots of fast-paced combat gameplay, reminiscent of Persona, Yakuza, and other popular JRPGs. The combat UI looks pretty similar to Persona 3 Reload, however, Metaphor features exciting new battle animations and character designs.
The trailer also showcases the gameplay elements other than combat, including cool new way of traversal using a Hoverboard, character interactions, in-game cooking mechanisms, and characters troubled with an oppressive regime. Trailer revealed during The Game Awards offered previously unseen story details, as well as a brief look at the game’s massive open-world map.
This new title is Atlus’s first time developing a full-fledged original fantasy RPG, marking the beginning of a whole new era for the developer. Metaphor was initially announced almost seven years ago. At the time, the title was dubbed Project Re Fantasy. The developer had revealed only glimpses of the upcoming title, with a couple of teasers revealed this year, along with the new name for the project, Metaphor ReFantazio.
The Metaphor is directed by Katsura Hashino, a veteran designer and game producer who has previously worked on many Persona titles and spin-offs. Other developers working on the project include character designer Shigenori Soejima, who has worked on Persona 3, 4, and 5, as well as concept artist Koda Kazuma, known for their work on Nier: Automata.
Metaphor ReFantazio will release in Fall 2024 for Xbox Series S|Xand Microsoft Windows.
