Encumbrance is a problem that has plagued every Bethesda RPG and Starfield is no exception. With a thousand planets to explore and countless items to collect, there is no room for not having any. Luckily enough, this time around we have an entire cargo hold to hoard precious and not-so-precious items which we may or may not use again.
Storage is usually a straightforward affair, but given how this is NASA-punk, there are a few elements that are worth delving into with a bit more detail before blasting off into space.
How does Starfield Ship Storage work?

Unlike some space games, Starfield has a more manual approach when it comes to accessing Ship Storage. To access the cargo hold you need to first head into the Ship’s cockpit and look for an independent panel on the wall to the left that says ‘Cargo Hold’. This panel seems to be located at the same place for all ships. Interacting with the panel allows access to the ship’s cargo hold.
The first ship you can acquire in the game is the Frontier which has a cargo capacity of 450 units. This is more than enough for all your early-game loot. But, when it comes to storage you can never have too much. Conveniently enough, Starfield has multiple means of storage within its ships.
While the cargo is the largest, safest, and most organized means of storage in a ship, there are alternative ways before going the upgrades route. Ships usually have many containers spread across various parts. One of the easiest containers to access is the Captain’s Locker which can be found in the cockpit.

Then, of course, there is the old-school way as revealed in the Starfield Direct Showcase, just drop stuff anywhere you feel like on the ship. This is also a very realistic approach to storing items in a spaceship. This is what NASA astronauts were actually doing before they enforced the T minus 10-second rule.
How to increase Starfield Ship Storage capacity?
No matter what your ship’s cargo capacity is, you’ll always want to upgrade as you progress through the game. Since trading is a desirable feature in the game and cargo holds serve as direct trading portals, it is worth investing in some useful storage upgrades as and when they become available. Countless storage options become available to you as you progress through the game.
Storage upgrades much like all upgrades are designated as modules that can be unlocked through various means as you progress through the questline. Depending on your ship and its capabilities, you can add one or more cargo modules to increase capacity. You can also add contraband smuggling modules to carry items of a forbidden nature.
