Starfield, the next space epic from Bethesda Game Studios, is one of the most anticipated games of 2023. Powering it would be the Creation Engine 2, which is being referred to widely as the Starfield Engine. Starfield claims to transport players to a galaxy of over 1,000 explorable planets as Bethesda’s first new IP in over 25 years.
Bethesda has extensively iterated upon its Creation Engine, the technology that has powered their games for over a decade, to produce a game of this scope and ambition.
Starfield Engine: How Bethesda is using Creation Engine 2 to power their upcoming space epic
Bethesda has developed Creation Engine 2 for Starfield, a next-generation version of its in-house game engine geared to the needs of a large space adventure RPG. The engine, as was seen in Starfield Direct, enables it to procedurally construct entire planets, each with its own geography, weather systems, and settings. From a development standpoint, the engine is critical to fulfilling the promise of discovering new worlds in a galaxy rich in life and intrigue.
The modding infrastructure introduced in prior Bethesda titles such as Skyrim and Fallout 4 is expanded in Creation Engine 2. Starfield will have complete mod support when it launches, allowing players to design their own weapons, spacecraft, characters, quests, and more. To match the demands of a modern open world space game, this 64-bit engine has been optimized to handle far more objects and better texture resolutions. This will allow mod authors to be more creative with their Starfield mods.

Creation Engine 2 includes an all-new physics and rendering technology to bring spacecraft, asteroids, and space stations to life for Starfield’s space flight and battle. This new Starfield Engine will allow players to easily switch between exploring planetary surfaces and engaging in space dogfights. On the ground, it produces photorealistic graphics, innovative lighting techniques such as ray tracing, and Bethesda’s trademark dynamic weather effects on full-scale planets.
Concerns regarding the Starfield engine
Suffice to say, the Starfield Engine has its doubters. Some detractors contend that it is out of date, referring to its roots in Gamebryo, a 1990s engine. While the new engine has gone through significant iterations through the years, some believe that a fully new engine created from the ground up would have been a better choice for a next-generation game like Starfield. Bethesda, on the other hand, has a lengthy history with their Creation Engine, and its deep integration with their creative process most likely influenced the decision to iterate on it rather than starting from scratch.

Only time will tell if Creation Engine 2 can deliver on Starfield’s grandiose vision. Bethesda has the resources and skills to make it work, with over 1,000 people and a track record of successful game launches. Fans and critics alike will, however, be on the lookout for any technological difficulties or limits that may result from employing an updated version of an old engine.
Starfield is slated to launch on September 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
