10 Features I hope are in Mafia: The Old Country

Mafia: The Old Country seems to be maybe the most bold idea Hangar 13 has taken with the franchise till now. It’s a prequel, set in 1905’s Sicily, which takes us way back to where it all began. This is before crime moved to America, and before Tommy’s story turned into a tragedy—even before Vito ever held a pistol.

Right now, there are so many open-world games with deep storylines that just being set somewhere unique isn’t enough. It has to feel new. It has to play new. So, these are ten features I believe can take The Old Country from being just another title to something truly special.

10. No Loading Screens, Just Transitions

We’re deep into the Unreal Engine 5 era now. No reason why cutscenes and gameplay shouldn’t just blend. Don’t fade to black. Lead me to walk from a family meal and straight into a mob ambush. Seamlessness makes you feel like you are the character. Mafia has always been about cinematic immersion. This tech should finally make that vision whole.

9. Side Quests That Belongs in This World

We don’t want you to give us random quests for cash. We need card games in smoky basements. Conversations that teach you about the land. A neighbor asking for help during harvest. Or a brutal bare-knuckle fight in a candle-lit cellar. These things build a world. That’s what side content should feel like.

8. Cars That Are a Struggle, but Rewarding

This is not GTA. These vehicles should be awful, but in a good way. Clunky engines, rough suspensions, and a bumpy ride. But that’s where immersion lives. I want to learn to drive these early beasts, feel frustrated sometimes, and proud at other times. Every hill climb should be earned.

7. Smarter, Reactive Enemy AI

Most games have enemies with short memories. They see a body, panic for 20 seconds, and then continue chatting, sometimes right next to the body. Let them call on their reinforcements. Let them rotate patrols. For all that it is blamed for, the Assassin’s Creed franchise nails this aspect. If I take cover behind a wall once, the next time they should anticipate me there. I want to be able to feel that I am playing against thinking human beings, not patterns.

6. An Actual Classic Mode, Optional But Hardcore

Classic Mode was executed well in Definitive Edition, but here, there are all the necessary ingredients to do better. Strip away modern HUD elements. Reduce ammo availability. Make NPC reactions less forgiving. For players like me who want tension in every encounter, make Classic Mode not just harder, but smarter.

5. Allow the Environment to React to the Player

There are so many games that claim to be “interactive” then all of a sudden, it’s all scripted. In The Old Country, I should be able to break into a wine cellar. Hide in a hay cart. Sneak across rooftops. Small things. Interactions that aren’t flashy, but which feel right. It is not about being able to do everything. More about doing the right things that feel natural.

4. A Wanted System That Makes Regional Sense

Why is it that in virtually all open-world games, I nick a loaf of bread in one town, and guards 80 miles away in another city instantly know? It doesn’t make sense. Make wanted levels local. Let some villages be indifferent. Let bribes occasionally work and sometimes fail spectacularly. If you get reported, that’s when rumors spread. Systems should feel like they’re rooted in the time and place.

3. Horses and Cars Connection

Stables, garages, we’ve had them all. But they tend to be impersonal. Let’s bond. Naming the horse, patching its wounds, washing your filthy Fiat, these are the little things that keep you connected to the world. If The Old Country is about roots, and these mechanics can be a reflection of that.

2. Horse Riding & Early Cars That Support the Story

In 1905, cars were barely usable. And horses were still running the show. But don’t add both just for the sake of variety. Make horse racing a social thing, underground, intense. And if we are indeed having cars, make them weird and hard to drive, like actual machines from that time. If transport is treated like a part of the narrative, it becomes memorable.

1. Give Sicily a pulse, not just roads

Yes, Free Ride has been in the series. But too often it just feels like empty space without direction. What it needs is life. Random events, secret interactions, weather that affects events, maybe even a murder you stumble on accidentally. Inspiration is readily available in the form of RDR2, and more recently KCD2.

Mafia: The Old Country might be something big. One of those rare types of games that do not depict the past, but make you relive it. But to pull that off, Hangar 13 must go beyond “good story” and focus on how players engage with that story moment to moment.

These days, if he’s not dissecting every meta shift in The Finals, he’s probably replaying Nier: Automata just to argue about the ending again. He writes at GamesHorizon to justify the obsession - and maybe help someone else finally beat that one boss.
