In Baldur’s Gate 3, Benryn is an NPC that you will encounter if you undertake Rescue the Trapped Man quest. Benryn and his wife Miri live in Waukeen’s Rest area of Baldur’s Gate 3 map.
When you are traveling northbound from the Blighted Village, you will encounter a bridge leading to Waukeen’s Rest. If you continue going northwest of this area, you will soon reach a burning house. When you are outside of the burning house, you will hear a man shouting and asking for help. If you enter the house, the Rescue the Trapped Man quest will begin.
How to Save Benryn in Baldur’s Gate 3
Once you enter the burning house, take the western staircase and climb up the stairs until you reach the second-floor landing. In a locked room adjacent to the landing, you can see Benryn trapped under heavy wooden beams that have fallen over him. He will shout for your help and you can decide to free him. First of all, you will need to break down the locked door. To do this, it’s best to step back from the door, keep a safe distance, and use spells or ranged attacks to knock the door down. If you are too close to the door, you will most definitely get hurt as the door won’t just break down. It will explode.

Once the door is cleared, you can step inside the room Benryn is locked in and interact with the wooden beams that have fallen on top of him. It is important that you perform a quick save before interacting with the wooden beams as it will offer you a quick second chance if your interaction checks fail. Based on the prompts that show up after you interact with these wooden beams, two options will appear. You can use either strength or investigation to deal with these beams.
- Strength: The prompt will read – Brace yourself to lift the wreckage. You can do a quick strength check and if you pass, you can lift the beams and free Benryn yourself.
- Investigation: The prompt will read – Find leverage to shift the beam. If you select this option, you will have to pass an investigation check and if passed, another beam will be highlighted that you can use to leverage the beams that fell on Benryn and rescue him.
What happens when you save Benryn in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Once you free Benryn and speak to him, he will inform you that his wife is also home and request you to help him find her. When you explore the house with him, you will soon find his wife’s corpse on the second floor of the western structure of the house. While he’s grieving the loss of his wife, he will tell you about his sister’s wedding that’s supposed to take place soon. Benryn and his wife were looking for her dowry, which he will now delegate to you. It’s important to note that the Rescue the Trapped Man quest won’t be completed unless you find and return the dowry to him.
Looking for the dowry is a bit tricky, as Benryn is in no condition to give you the exact location. He will point you towards a rough location and you need to find the dowry item yourself. However, the item can be found pretty close by, if you decide to go looking for it. Here are the steps for locating the item:
- Step out of the burning house and take the path to the left of the building,
- You will encounter some flames blocking your way which can be easily jumped over.
- After a little travel, you will find a stable, with a corpse of a halfling lying beside it.
- Enter the stable and search the haystack placed in the corner. Interacting with the haystack will prompt an automated perception check.
- If you pass the Perception check, you will find a hidden chest that houses the dowry ring.
- Return the dowry ring to Benryn, who can be found at the same place you left him.
- Once you hand the ring off and take Benryn’s leave, the Rescue the Trapped Man quest will be concluded.
Note: Unlike most side quests in Baldur’s Gate 3, completing Rescue the Trapped Man yields absolutely no reward. You will only get a completed entry in your journal. If you are striving to 100% the game, you can return the ring and complete the quest. However, if you are looking for a reward and are okay with leaving the quest unfinished, you can keep the ring yourself, not return it to Benryn and eventually pawn the ring off for 20 Gold.
