Swen Vincke, the person in charge of Baldur’s Gate 3, recently talked about how important it is for game makers to have the freedom to do things their own way. Vincke thinks that this freedom is really important for making great games, and the best way to have it is when game studios don’t have to do what big companies tell them to do. He elaborated in his interview with game pressure.
According to Vincke, focusing more on making money than on the game itself can stop new ideas. He doesn’t like that the industry cares mostly about making money quickly, saying that this makes them choose money over making something good. Vincke says that games made with love and a focus on making gamers happy will be more successful in the end.

Vincke also stressed how crucial it is for game creators to be gamers themselves. He believes that those in charge of making games should know and enjoy the player experience. This point of view, he thinks, makes sure that games are made with a real understanding of what gamers like.
The interview also talked about how independent developers are becoming more powerful. Vincke believes the industry is changing as self-publishing and digital distribution platforms become more popular. These platforms let developers go around traditional barriers and have more control over their project’s creative direction.
“We’re not seeing ourselves like saints or whatever, we’re just trying to make our game. To be able to make our game, we need to have a level of freedom that we can only achieve if we are independent. We fight very hard for that independence and we’re very hard to work with. I think I speak for pretty much everybody on the team. We really know what we like to play also. And you can see that if we’re not achieving that, everybody in the team grows restless until it’s getting good. That’s the most important bit. The company tries to create room and space so that we can make the thing that we would like to play with. I think that’s a really good recipe for a game developer.”

Vincke worried that big companies might take control of how things are shared, which could mean going back to having strict rules and limits on being creative. He thinks that it’s important to have open platforms so that people can grow and learn in a good way.

Vincke also talked about Baldur’s Gate 3. The game did really well, and now some people think it’s changing how RPGs are made. They say other RPG makers are feeling more confident because of Baldur’s Gate 3’s success. This is helping them ask for more freedom to be creative with their own games.
