Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Raises The Stakes From The Very Start

Set in the land of Lumiere, Expedition 33 sees you control a party of individuals with diverse skill sets exploring a mysterious Continent inhabited by The Painter, the game’s antagonist. They are attempting to stop The Painter from wiping them out of existence, with the latter killing everyone of a certain age every year by drawing on a giant monolith.
The protagonists are the thirty-third such expedition to attempt this, meaning that several others have tried – and failed – to do so. It is a novel premise set in a land that promises a lot of twists and turns over the course of Clair Obscur’s narrative.
The Cast of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 brings an ensemble cast to the table, with its characters each having a distinct personality and their own motivation. There is Gustave, an engineer voiced by Charlie Cox, whom you may know from the Daredevil TV show. Maelle is an orphan and quite skilled with her rapier, voiced by Jennifer English of Baldur’s Gate 3 fame. Lune is the party’s mage, brought to life by Kirsty Rider, who is as interested in The Painter’s origins as she is in ending its threat.
Others include Renoir (voiced by Andy Serkis) and Verso (voiced by Ben Starr), who are joined by several other characters who are sure to play their respective parts in the game’s 40-hour narrative.
A Novel Approach to Turn-Based RPGs

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 takes inspiration from titles like Persona and Final Fantasy to put a unique spin on a tried and tested gameplay loop. Each character in your party comes with unique abilities and skills that you can use once per turn during combat. However, Sandfall’s use of Quick Time Events to determine the success and damage of each attack, along with requiring quick reflexes for defense, changes things up from other traditional offerings in the genre.
The game also features a semi-open world for the party to explore, containing mini-bosses, new gear, and side quests to take on, which could add a few more hours to its total playtime.
