Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown got a brand-new gameplay trailer today, showcasing what you can expect out of this title that marks Ubisoft’s return to its one of most adored series.
The first section of the trailer—which focuses on exploration—shows features that you’d expect from any standard Metroidvania game. Platforming with traps and contraptions galore, which the protagonist Sargon navigates around with his fast and agile movement. In classic Metroidvania fashion, there will be things that you’d have to backtrack to after you gain more traversal abilities.
Now the novelty factor of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is the time manipulation mechanic, which Ubisoft is calling ‘Time Powers’. As showcased in the trailer, this will be one of the core gameplay mechanics. While mechanically The Lost Crown is quite distinct, this will remind you of some thematic similarities with Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.
Besides twin swords being part and parcel of your combat kit, the trailer showcased a magical bow that lets you approach fights keeping yourself out of harm’s way. However, that’s not all! You have a whole arsenal of magic abilities at your disposal, which you will gradually unlock through the gameplay progression.
Speaking of progression, Prine of Persia: The Lost Crown seems to be inspired by the likes of Hollow Knight, especially when it comes to the save system. You encounter magical trees along your way, where you can save your progress and switch between your abilities and amulets.
The gameplay trailer also gave glimpses of various NPCs across The Lost Crown’s game world, whom you will encounter for side quests. So, it’s not all traps and monsters; you will have some friends on your side throughout your journey in the mythological Persian world.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is slated for release on January 18, 2024, on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Amazon Luna. There is also a free demo scheduled to be available on January 11.
