Below, you’ll find detailed explanations of the above steps on the Starfield Vanguard journey.
Step 1: Initiating Contact with Commander Tuala
Head to the MAST headquarters in New Atlantis City. There, just as you enter, there will be a reception desk behind which will be a board reading “VANGUARD”. Commander John Tuala will be there at the reception. When you reach up to him and initiate dialogue, he will ask if you are interested in joining Vanguard. Talking of the perks, he will inform you of them being earned credits, as well as getting the UC citizenship.

When express your interest, he will briefly inform you about the nitty gritty of the enrollment protocol. Following this, he will give you your call to action. You would be required to go to the Orientation hall and get signed up at the registration terminal
Step 2: Going to the Orientation Hall
After receiving instructions from the commander. Turn around and start moving forward. You will soon encounter an elevator. The sign above the elevator will read “MAST LOBBY”. Once you enter the elevator, you will see the elevator buttons. Pressing the required button on your PC/Xbox will open a list of floors. You need to select the “Vanguard Orientation Hall”.

Once you reach the floor and the elevator doors open, you will see a hallway with lanes separated by metal dividers. Start walking forward, you will find a kiosk next to two NPCs engaging in chitchat. There will be a bubble describing the display reading, ‘VANGUARD REGISTRATION’.

When you interact with the monitor, you will see clear instructions to confirm your registration for the exam. After that, the Enlistment agreement will be displayed. Read if you wish to; once you are satisfied, confirm the Enlistment Agreement. Once done, turn around and move towards the door. Once you open it, you will see various displays in the museum.

Pressing the button in front of a display will lead to the playback of an audio file describing the display. Immerse yourself in the backdrop leading to the formation of the UCs if desired, however, this is completely optional. If you want to skip to the test. Simply ignore the displays and move ahead.
Once you cross the door on your way, you will be greeted, once again by various displays. You know the drill. If you wish to skip the pleasantries, simply take your first left and keep moving ahead. Continue doing so till you steer clear of the uniforms. The decor and displays do not stop there. You want to move straight ahead, following the path till you reach this elevator. (See picture below).

Step 3: Simulation Test
Once you press the buttons of the elevator. You will see a straight hallway leading to a door. Once you enter it, you will see two symmetrically placed staircases. One tilted to the left and the other to the right. Pick either one of these two as these will lead to the simulation pod. Once you climb up, look around to find this circular pod entrance.

Walk up to the pod opening and interact with it. Once you enter it, walk straight ahead to an elevated platform. The beacon will guide you to a Pilot seat. Walk up to it. Interact with the seat in order to initiate the simulation.
Step 4: Attempting the Pilot Exam
As instructed by the proctor, the agenda is to neutralise as many Tiers of opponents as possible before your ship is disabled. The minimum requirement to pass is to defeat three Tiers of enemies. In a few seconds, enemy starships will start spawning in the simulation.

Fasten your seatbelt and engage in epic Interstellar combat. Although passing the exam is fairly easy, keep in mind to bob and weave. That is, maneuver your ship and dodge enemy fire. Rinse and repeat, keep in mind that the increase in Tiers will also increase difficulty. Your priority is to protect your ship first and to inflict damage second. Once you pass the exam, move toward the pod opening.

Choose between annihilating more enemy tiers (purely optional) and moving ahead with the enlistment protocol. Once you decide to exit the simulator, you will be congratulated on passing the exam. Walk forward and turn right to encounter the elevator again.

Enter the elevator and press the button. Once the floor selection dialog box appears, select “Lobby/ Commander Tuala’s Office”. Return to Commander Tuala. After doing so, engage in dialogue and select “I wrapped up my Pilot Exam and they told me to come back here”. He will brief you about your scores. You would be required to complete your probation mission. If and when you do you will gain UC citizenship in 10 years.

After that affirm when asked if you wish to pledge allegiance by swearing an oath. After a small to and fro, you will be asked to follow Commander Tuala. Once you do you will swear an oath under the starlit sky. After hearing the oath and the responsibilities which follow along with it, reply with “I do”.
Congratulations. You are now an esteemed provisional member of Starfield Vanguard. Complete your probational mission to be granted member status. In Fallout’s Brotherhood of Steel fashion, this marks your welcome to the United Colonies where your journey promises an epic tale among the stars! Supra et Ultra!
