Scythe users are underrated in anime as their weapon of choice is often considered less flashy than swords or daggers. However, anyone who has seen the Grim Reaper in its various renditions or watched Maka bond with her sentient weapon Soul will disagree. Scythe users are powerful because of their dexterity and uniqueness in weapon choice and the skill required to wield it.

Due to its connection to the Grim Reaper, the scythe is often naturally seen as a gruesome tool in popular culture. The Japanese undoubtedly noticed this trend because numerous scythe-wielding anime characters pay tribute to this traditional representation of death. We’ve put up a list of the top 13 anime characters who best demonstrate how devastating a scythe can be.

1. Maka Albarn from Soul Eater

It would be difficult to discuss the best scythe users in anime without mentioning Soul Eater, a show that primarily utilises the weapon and concentrates on the future of reapers. With Soul Eater, the relationship between the weapon and the wielder is far more intimate and significant because the weapons are somehow also humanoid companions.

Maka Albarn and Soul Evans, her scythe, are at the epicentre of this whole thing. Maka starts out with a lot of confidence in her weapon, and as time goes on, her skill with the sword only gets better. As opposed to most other scythe users, on this list or elsewhere, Maka’s mastery of her weapon is simultaneously born of her understanding with her weapon Soul.

The weapon Hisagi uses when it isn’t sealed is made of two scythes connected by chains, making it more lethal and useful than a typical blade. His weapon changes into two tiny scythes connected by a lengthy chain once the power of his Shikai is released; this is a blade designed to reap life. Shuhei doesn’t make a lot of noise about himself. But he is a man who rises to the occasion when it counts, and he has a pure heart.

A legendary serial killer named Jack the Ripper terrorised London in the late 1800s. A surprising number of anime shows have offered up their genre-heavy interpretations of this horrific killer including the recently popular Record of Ragnarok, and Black Clover is just one of them. 

The leader of the Green Mantis team and the master of deadly Slash Magic is Black Clover’s Jack the Ripper. In the fantasy-action anime GATE, a mysterious gate arises and starts letting loose a plethora of wondrous warriors and creatures, forever altering Tokyo. Giselle certainly belongs in the fantasy camp in GATE, which also features some fascinating real-world warriors. 

Due to her prestigious position as one of the Twelve Apostles, Giselle is a humanoid dragon girl and one of the absolutely strongest characters in GATE. The attractiveness of this sinister scythe-wielding character stems from the harmony of her overall design and her weapon. Her scythe’s body and the heel are shaped like vertebrae, and so are her horns.

6. Erigor from Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail is a slow-moving anime because Natsu Dragneel, the protagonist, initially does not live up to expectations. In fact, some have argued that the story would have done better if Laxus, Erza, Gajeel, or Gray had been the protagonists instead and as such, the other members of his Guild and the other wizards he encounters, though, are all pretty fascinating. 

Erigor, a member of the evil Dark Guild Eisenwald, is a notorious assassin who goes by the name “Death God” and rapidly causes a stir. Erigor’s preferred weapon is a scythe, which he utilises to intimidate his opponents even more. Natsu is dedicated to getting stronger, while Erigor goes above and above only to get more physical strength.

7. Hidan from Naruto Shippuden

What is superior to a scythe with just one blade? An Eldtrich monstrosity was placated with a triple-bladed weapon. This S-Rank missing ninja’s primary objective is to kill as many people and ninjas as he can, and that in the most damaging way possible, unlike other legendary villains like Pain and Madara who had more reasonable motivations.

For almost 40 years, the superpowered fight theatrics of Dragon Ball have captivated fans of the rich shonen world created by Akira Toriyama. The most recent installment of the franchise, Dragon Ball Super, has more audacious antagonists than ever before, such that one of whom is even a malicious clone of the show’s protagonist, Goku. 

Goku Black serves as Future Zamasu’s sidekick in a grand plan to exterminate all mortals from their existence. Rosé Goku Black, a Super Saiyan, carries a powerful weapon made with a powerful energy that he calls the ominous Sickle of Sorrow. Super Saiyan Blue Vegito can practically be eliminated with this pseudo-scythe/scythe-look-alike.

10. Ruby Rose from RWBY

Although RWBY has developed into a substantial series with imaginative animation, it still relies on many of the character and action conventions of anime. Ruby Rose plays a prominent role in RWBY and is particularly skilled at taking on the Creatures of Grimm that belong to the God of Darkness.

Shinoa plays the innocent schoolgirl card, but she actually commands a demon army and carries a violent demon’s spirit inside her scythe. Shinoa is an extremely deadly opponent, and her scythe is no exception because to her mastery of this unstable weapon.

12. Zorin Blitz in Hellsing Ultimate

The fact that many of the characters that feature as important story-points in Hellsing Ultimate are undead vampires with enhanced power and immortality gives them a significant advantage. It may seem like overkill to equip a flashy blade with a deadly bloodsucker, but it is precisely why Zorin Blitz from Hellsing Ultimate is so feared.

Perhaps the reason Zorin is so terrifying is that she doesn’t need to even use her scythe, even though it is a formidable weapon. The misery she can however inflict with it, all as she dismembers those who stand in her way, however, is something she truly enjoys. Durarara!! is a tremendously intricate anime series that builds a community with a scary underworld of criminals roaming the streets. One of the most recognisable anime characters is Celty Sturluson, commonly known as the ominously termed Black Rider, who is a brilliantly updated version of the Headless Horseman tale.

Celty rides a nice motorbike through the streets looking for her missing head, but she also carries a trendy scythe to make sure she doesn’t have to deal with any unwanted troubles. Celty doesn’t have a lot of power, yet she makes for such a striking image.
