Phantom Liberty, the one and only major expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 is finally coming after nearly three years since the game’s release. Initially, the game was quite unstable and unoptimized, but Update 2.0 has taken care of any problems before the launch of Phantom Liberty.
If you’re someone who progressed far in Cyberpunk 2077 before the update 2.0 and is now wondering if you should start a new game for the upcoming expansion, the short answer is yes.
Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty: Why You Should Start a New Game
Starting a new character for Phantom Liberty would be the right thing to do, as recommended by the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 in a recent X (tweet).
Hey, chooms! While you’ll be able to continue the game with your current character on an existing save, we recommend starting a new game after @CyberpunkGame Update 2.0. Due to the number of changes, starting fresh will enhance your overall gameplay experience! pic.twitter.com/rqdokahhAg

In the latest Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.0, CD Projekt RED did a complete overhaul of the game, including its mechanics and performance, as well as added a lot of new elements. That’s why it’s essential for a player to reset and start a fresh game so they can experience all these latest changes one step at a time without overwhelming themselves.
Once you start a new game, you’ll also start with a renewed set of attributes and skill tree that you can use to turn your V into a cyberpsycho powerhouse. This new set of cyberware upgrades, vehicle combat, and mechanics will take your old quests in Night City to a whole new level.
However, players who’ve managed to progress a lot and already have maxed-out characters can choose not to start a new game. In the update 2.0, the game will refund all the skill points and attribute points, which will help you rebuild your V using the new skills and attributes to start your journey for the Phantom Liberty expansion.
The backstory
Cyberpunk 2077 is a role-playing action game developed by CD Projekt Red that was released almost three years ago. However, the game was in a half-baked, broken state on its launch and was criticized because of its numerous bugs and poor optimization. Although the developers deployed many patches to fix the game, they were very miniscule compared to the latest 2.0 update that changed many core gameplay mechanics.
