Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will be the first CRPG set in the Warhammer 40k universe. Coming from Owlcat Games who have already proven their mettle in the genre with the Pathfinder series, Rogue Trader will let you foray into the Imperium with turn-based combat and a unique character alignment system.
When Is Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Coming Out?
Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader will release on December 7, 2023.
Owlcat’s CRPG is set in the Koronus Expanse, which is a backwater of sorts in the vast universe of Imperium. You don the role of an intergalactic merchant’s dynasty head and venture through a mostly uncharted stretch of the void.
It’s this setting that facilitates the flexibility in roleplaying in whichever way you want—you can “stay faithful to the God-Emperor, or consort with enemies of Mankind.” There is also a more benevolent middle-road approach if you plan on not swaying to either of the extremes. This political compass is at the heart of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’s character alignment system; Edwin Evans-Thirlwell of Rock Paper Shotgun writes more about it on their feature after their tryst with the game’s beta.
Rogue Trader also employs a fully-fledged companion system—letting you gather “your retinue of righteous heroes, twisted psykers, and perfidious xenos.” Besides bringing in more firepower and perspective to your intergalactic rampage against enemies of Mankind, all of them come with their own personal quests.
And while we are talking about in-game companions, let’s not forget Rogue Trader’s ingenious co-op feature that will let you join your friends or vice versa at any point in the game. For those of you who want to play turn-based CRPGs in groups, this might be the best thing to be added to the game ahead of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader release.
Suffice it to say, with how 2023 has been the year of resurgence of CRPGs, especially courtesy of Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3, we anticipate Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader to continue the trend.
