You’ll need the best equipment you can find as you make your way through the Dragon’s Dogma 2 world. Sometimes, the best equipment for the job is something you already have, just with certain enhancements. And one material you may wish to find is Boltscale.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 – Where to Find Boltscales
Boltscale is described in-game as “a piece of serpent tissue.” You need to it to make improvements to some gear, but where do you find it? There are a lot of serpents in the game, after all. Most of them don’t seem to drop more than the Suarian Scale item and fish. To find Boltscales, you need to defeat the more powerful serpent creatures in Darkhorde Cave.
Darkhorde Cave is located due south from Sacred Arbor. See the screenshot above for a map of its precise location. I recommend approaching the cave by following the main roads leading northwest from Vernworth. The enemies along that route (with the exception of a dangerous Minotaur) are pretty mild. You should be able to take them out with ease.

As you get close to your destination, you’ll encounter thicker forestation. Be careful of enemies who lurk here. They use the foliage to hide their approach. I’ve practically tripped over some of them before noticing them. Past those enemies, you should reach a campfire near one end of a dry riverbed. There are some standard Saurian foes here. Defeat them and make use of the local campfire to restore energy you might lose.
When you are rested from your journey, head into Darkhorde Cave. The enemies within are pretty fearsome. They have more durable hides, and they are more aggressive. Some of them also may try to use lightning-based attacks. With luck, you can take on one of them at a time as you journey into the cave. In my experience, about half of the monsters will give up a Boltscale when you defeat them.
While you are in the area, make sure to also check for valuable minerals you can mine. There’s a ruined house near the campfire site, as well. It contains some valuable items, including the Myfyr bow.
