While not canon as per the events of the manga, the new film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King remains highly anticipated. Mangaka Yuki Tabata’s statements suggest that the film will be a unique work of anime. He talks about how the movie’s plot can make viewers ask why that specific plot thread wasn’t present in the original manga. However, the mangaka had good reason to do so, as it might not have fit into the original timeline back then.
Thankfully, we got a new anime-original film set to restore the hype for the Black Clover story instead. Fans can now relax knowing that the Clover Kingdom will be visited again this summer. Since Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King won’t have a theatrical release, the eagerly awaited film will soon be available on streaming services. As such, the movie will make its global launch only on Netflix on Friday, June 16.
Although not canon, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is set to tie into an important aspect of the story
Despite not being manga canon, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King may nevertheless be connected to the series through original anime storylines that make reference to the movie’s events. The release date of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King was originally scheduled for March 16, 2023, but it was postponed because of COVID-19 production issues.
In October 2022, we received our first glance at Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. Asta declares in the film’s concluding moments, “Persistence is my magic!” The protagonist’s journey from an adolescent with a poor reputation for his loud cries to a self-assured, likeable hero has been filled with crucial conflicts, camaraderie, and the general desire to excel. Soon after, a second trailer for the movie was released, this one featured even more action scenes.
Here I Stand by Treasure, a wonderful song, is featured in the trailer. The evil wizard kings are first revealed to us in the second character trailer. Conrad Leto is likely one of them and is meant to have a significant role in the plot. However, the only thing we know about Conrad to date, is that the people of the Clover Kingdom adored him dearly – whether that is a truth, or a simple fact left to be subverted, is yet to be seen.
Netflix defines the plot of the new film as:
“As a lionhearted boy who can’t wield magic strives for the title of Wizard King, four banished Wizard Kings of yore return to crush the Clover Kingdom.”
Cast and crew for Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King
Ayataka Tanemura has directed the film, while the screenplay has been written by Ai Orii and Johnny Onda. In charge of the storyboard, are Ayataka Tanemura, Isuta and Tatsuya Yoshihara. The unit directors are Takahiro Enokida and Tatsuya Yoshihara. Minako Seki has performed the music for the film, while Itsuko Takeda has been in charge of the character design. Last, but definitely not least, the brilliant animation is a testament to the amazing directorial skills of Kurika Yamagata and Yuka Katsuya.
Studio Pierrot has returned and is in charge of the production quality whereas Michael Schnieder has been dubbed as the dubbing director. Meanwhile, the Japanese cast features several old faces returning for long time viewers of the Black Clover anime (which itself can be viewed on Netflix too) while newer voices have joined the fray as well. That is hardly surprising, as the upcoming conflict will feature never-before seen characters from the Clover Kingdom’s past such as Jester Galandros and Leto himself.
