The ever-evolving Disney-verse is receiving a new game on the Nintendo Switch, called Disney Illusion Island. The anticipated title wraps itself around the adventures of Mickey Mouse and his famous friends. These goofballs are on a mission to uncover the mysteries of Monoth Island. They must attempt to recover three magical books that can help save the world from impending doom.
The game is developed by Dlala Studios, the team behind the most recent Battletoads installment for Nintendo. Disney Illusion Island aims to be the most ambitious game the developer has ever worked on, according to a Nintendo Life interview with Dlala Studios CEO AJ Grand-Scrutton.
Disney Illusion Island release date, platform, and price
Disney Illusion Island is coming soon to Nintendo Switch on July 28, 2023. You can pre-order the digital as well as physical version for $39.99.
Being an exclusive launch for the Switch, the game has a special platform-specific feature — you can play it with a single Joycon in an effort to make it as simple and convenient as possible. A Joycon may be laid on its side so that users can use it like a traditional, older Nintendo controller. This will make the game much simpler to navigate, for newer, smaller, and less experienced players, than using two Joycons.
Disney Illusion Island story, characters, and gameplay
Disney Illusion Island is a 2D platform game that resembles a vintage Metroidvania. The game will be spiritually similar to Castle of Illusion, another Mickey Mouse side-scrolling game. Mickey and his buddies face bosses in a traditional sidescroller format while completing platforming quests, puzzles, and other objectives. It’s important to keep in mind that there aren’t any ‘attack’ buttons.
Instead, you must use all of your skills to sprint, leap, swim, swing, and avoid lethal traps. In addition, you may overcome enemies by gathering loot and enhancing mobility abilities like wall-jumping. In co-op mode, you can help one another by bouncing around and lowering ropes.
The gorgeous hand-drawn animated art is one of Disney Illusion Island’s most striking features. The chief developer of the game, Grant Allen, claimed that it was intentional for the animation to emulate vintage Disney movies. The game will include orchestrated music, original voice actors, and retro animation style.
You can play as Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, or Goofy in addition to Mickey. Each playable Disney figure has unique mechanics that are modeled by a certain kind of movable object. For instance, Mickey’s motions are animated because he is modeled after a bouncing ball. Minnie, who is shaped like a paper airplane, feels like she’s floating freely as she jumps into the air.
Disney Illusion Island already has our attention, and the game’s art direction certainly reminds us of Cuphead.
