Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate expansion introduced a new mechanic called Matterspark. With this, you are able to turn yourself into a ball of lightning and travel through tight spaces, which in turn helps you to progress forward in the campaign.
However, the community isn’t happy with this change as they feel it’s unnecessary, forced, and disruptive. Here’s a discussion on the Matterspark controversy, and what a lot of players are expressing about this new introduction in a game like Destiny 2.
Destiny 2’s Matterspark feature has led to unhappy fans in the community

When Matterspark was shown for the first time in The Edge of Fate ViDoc, it received a positive reception. However, the moment players got their hands on the expansion and got to experience the campaign on July 15, 2025, the positive perception completely changed.
Both players and streamers have claimed that the Matterspark feature feels forced and unnecessary. However, there are multiple reasons why they feel that way, and some of them seem quite valid.
Unnecessary Repetition
The first is repetition, where the entire gameplay revolves around turning into Matterspark, moving to a new location, using a Relocator, and repeating it once again. This is the key gameplay loop of the campaign, which is vastly different from how previous Destiny 2 campaigns have been handled, where players didn’t have to keep repeating the exact same puzzles.
Uninituitive Camera Movement
The second major reason is the camera movement, where the moment you enter the Matterspark state, it starts moving in a chaotic fashion. This leads to jerky camera movements in tight spaces, which leads to motion sickness and nausea.
Lack of Proper Control
Finally, controlling the Matterspark is also quite difficult, as you will end up moving in the opposite direction than intended most of the time. This goes completely against the core gameplay of Destiny, where it has always been praised for being fluid and easy to grasp.
However, these problems with the Matterspark might have even larger implications, which is the worrying part. The community has already developed a negative perception of a campaign that Bungie was banking on to succeed.
The company decided to push Destiny 2 down the priority list to focus on Marathon, but the latter has been gripped with controversy and delayed from its original release date. This means Bungie was hoping that Edge of Fate would succeed, even if not at the scale of The Final Shape or Lightfall.
However, that hasn’t happened so far, and there is a high possibility that Matterspark will be a key feature for the raid releasing on July 19, 2025, and dungeons based on this new location. If players dislike it now, they will dislike it in the future as well, which creates a major dilemma for Bungie, as they are already struggling to maintain even one of their franchises on the right note.
What can Bungie do to fix the Matterspark problem in Destiny 2

Right now, the perception is really negative, but Bungie can fix it in the future. The first thing they need to work with is the movement and camera motion, which leads to motion sickness among players.
Secondly, they need to reduce the number of puzzles and focus more on presenting the narrative through cinematics and dialogues. This is something that made The Final Shape and Witch Queen really appealing, as most of the story was through cinematics and dialogue, and the gameplay part was simple.
However, pushing the same mechanic multiple times can lead to players feeling annoyed, and that has to stop. Let’s see how this initial reaction from the community takes shape over the next few days, and where does this lead Destiny 2 to.
