For a game that lets you band together with renegades through the Wild West, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online are quite restrictive in terms of crossplay support.
Rockstar has decidedly moved on from Red Dead Online, at least in terms of big game updates. However, the game still sees a somewhat healthy player base having a good time with its activities, missions, and free roam.
Now, if you are someone willing to jump in with your friend in the game, here’s everything you need to know about crossplay in Red Dead Redemption 2’s online counterpart.
Red Dead Online Does Not Support Crossplay
At the time of writing, Red Dead Online matchmaking and progression are divided by the platforms – PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
However, the only silver lining is that there is cross-generation support. This means players on PS4 can play Red Dead Online with PS5 players. The same holds true for players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
Is Crossplay Coming To Red Dead Online?
It is very unlikely that Red Dead Online will receive crossplay support this later in its development lifecycle.
With Rockstar mostly walking away from supporting Red Dead Online in any major way and instead focusing on more of its live service resources on GTA Online, the writing on the wall is clear.
Plus, as we have seen with other major games, crossplay support is something that has to be prioritized early on in the game’s development pipeline. As shared by other devs, it’s extremely hard to implement crossplay later on once game builds look more and more distinguished across different platforms.
Rockstar has generally been averse to adding crossplay support to its titles. We are sure though that it would have been a great addition as a feature and let more people play games like Red Dead Online and GTA Online together.
