Gameplay
If you’ve followed 2D Mario games for a while, the gameplay loop in Super Mario Bros. Wonder will strike a chord from the very first reveal trailer. Initially, it retains the familiar aesthetics and side-scrolling dynamics seen in previous Mario games. However, as Mario ventures through the new game world, things start to unfold in exciting ways.
While traditional side-scrolling platforming remains a core element, Super Mario Bros. Wonder spices things up with fresh additions, appealing to both newcomers and long-time fans. Alongside the classic power-ups like the mushroom, fire flower, and tanuki Mario, Wonder introduces a game-changing power-up: the Wonder Flower. This new power-up differs in appearance from the usual, radiating a cosmic glow instead of a solid color. It doesn’t seem to emerge from ‘?’ Blocks like other Mario items but materializes in emptier environments, as showcased in the reveal trailer.

The Wonder Flower, when activated, adds an extraordinary dimension to the game’s carefully crafted environments, offering unique experiences you wouldn’t encounter otherwise. These enhancements can range from animating inanimate objects like tubes to allowing Mario to morph into different forms like a sizable spikey ball to clear obstacles.
The full range of Wonder abilities, referred to as Wonder Events, is yet to be fully unveiled. Alongside the Wonder Flower, the reveal trailer introduces another intriguing item: the Wonder Seed. Though its exact purpose remains unclear, it’s possible that it could be a collectible item for future use, perhaps involved in growing a Wonder Flower from the seed and utilizing its abilities.
Game Modes
Super Mario Bros. Wonder supports local couch co-op, allowing a maximum of four players to join the game using separate Joycon sets on a single system. Players can progress through the entire game in co-op mode, and others can join or leave at any save point. While players won’t collide with each other, they are confined to the same screen area and can’t venture off independently.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers online multiplayer functionality. You can set up private lobbies accommodating up to 12 players. These players then form smaller groups of 4 to tackle levels together, offering assistance such as sharing items, reviving teammates, and providing encouragement.
Furthermore, there’s an engaging competitive mode called Friend Races for up to 4 players. In this mode, players compete to swiftly complete a level, defeat a boss, or be the first to discover the coveted Wonder Seed.
Story
The plot of Super Mario Bros. Wonder revolves around Mario and his companions venturing into a fresh realm, the Flower Kingdom, at the invitation of the kind-hearted Prince Florian. However, trouble ensues swiftly when Bowser stumbles upon the remarkable Wonder Flower, leading to chaos as he merges with the prince’s castle and wreaks havoc in true Bowser fashion. Our mission, of course, is to thwart Bowser’s plans.
While maintaining the classic 2D Mario essence in appearance and gameplay, this new addition to the series introduces some exciting twists. The adventure takes place in the Flower Kingdom and its accompanying islands, collectively known as the Petal Isles. These lands offer a mix of linear and open exploration, showcasing the diverse and vibrant landscapes Mario games are known for.
Besides Mario, Super Mario Bros. Wonder provides a roster of playable characters including Yoshi, Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, and Princess Daisy. Additionally, players can opt for Nabbit or Yoshi as their character. Nabbit and Yoshi have the unique advantage of being invulnerable to damage, although they won’t undergo transformations with power-ups. Yoshi boasts special abilities such as Flutter Jump, as well as the ability to consume and project objects.
