Exploring Death Stranding 2: On the Beach isn’t merely about package delivery, it’s survival. Sam Bridges is ready for tough roads, but fatigue is unavoidable. Resting is essential to keep Sam running, but a Private Room or safe house is not available in every zone. Fortunately, the game permits to rest anywhere, even without a shelter, if you learn how to do it properly.
Resting in the Wild: Sit, Sleep, Recover
Use the Sit Feature
You don’t have to have a facility to catch your breath. To rest anywhere, just hold the Square (□) button and Sam will sit on the ground. This can be done anywhere that’s safe, outside of combat, BT zones, or enemy-held areas. Once seated, a few rest-related choices appear.

Choose Between Massage or Sleep
These types of resting do not offer all the advantages of a Private Room but are suitable while traveling long distances or between mission sites:
- Massage Shoulders: Gentle recovery of stamina.
- Sleep: Activation of a deeper rest animation, and Sam rests for full stamina and blood recharge.
- Idle Rest: If you do not press anything while sitting, Sam will eventually sleep on his own.
Things to watch out for before Sleeping Outside
Watch for Cold Climates
Resting in frozen mountains or cold areas is hazardous. Without thermal gear, Sam’s endurance dwindles quickly and can lead to hypothermia, which may eventually kill him and push him into the Seam. Therefore, if you are going to rest in cold areas, never forget to carry thermal pads or take shelter quickly. Resting outside in such places is very risky.
Utilize Timefall Shelters for Safe Rest
Once opened up (somewhere between Order No. 004), Timefall Shelters can be constructed with PCCs. They protect you from Timefall, repair your cargo’s durability, and are the perfect location to sleep without concern for environmental damage. They’re the second-best thing to Private Rooms.

Below a Timefall Shelter, you can sit and sleep with impunity and zero weather-related damage. Here are some additional things you can do as well:
- Player deployable: Provided you are in a UCA-chipped area.
- Community Structures: You’ll also have shelters constructed by other players. They are free to use and usually have likes, showing popularity or utility.
Combine Rest with Utility
- Rest near Cairns: Multiplayer-connected landmarks. Resting beside them boosts stamina recovery speed.
- Bring heated pads with you at all times in snowy environments.
- Don’t sleep in BT areas or enemy bases, you’re not safe there even when it is quiet.
- Take a look at the weather forecast before sleeping, since timefall can creep up and destroy your cargo or wake you up.
Why You Should Prefer Private Rooms

When you can, always use Private Rooms within Knot Cities, Facilities, or on the Magellan ship. You can enter them by standing on the round elevator platform and pressing Square.
Advantages include:
- Complete stamina and blood recharge
- Weapon reloads
- Max recovery without risk
Final Summary

You don’t require a bed to survive Death Stranding 2. Resting while on the move, by sitting, massaging, or sleeping, allows you to recover stamina even in the wilderness. Just don’t rest in the cold without equipment, and construct Timefall Shelters where you can. Be mindful of the environment, have thermal gear at the ready, and rest wisely.
