Honkai: Star Rail features a pity system similar to other HoYoverse titles. The pity system guarantees players a top-tier item after a certain number of pulls in the Gacha system (luck-based mechanism).
Pity is the points given to players when they make a pull. A higher amount of pity eventually guarantees a valuable character and Lightcone for different banners. The pity system can help players guarantee high-value items of their desire.
About the pity system
In the Gacha system, players receive pity after a pull that is not a five-star or four-star item, with individually tracked pity. It is a system designed for unlucky players who do not get a valued character even after several pulls in Gacha. After a certain number of pulls, according to the pity of the player, they get a guaranteed 4-star or 5-star.
The pity system varies on the type of banner; pity carries over between the same types of banners. So, if a player doesn’t get a desired Light Cone or character in an event, their pity will carry over into the next event of the same type of banner.
Soft pity and Hard pity
There are popular unofficial terms for pity types in the Gacha system – soft pity and hard pity. They are basically the maximum threshold of how many pulls players need to obtain a 5-star character. Soft pity is capped at 70-80 pulls, and hard pity guarantees a 5-star at 90 pulls.
The pull amounts are known as warps in Honkai: Star Rail, and different amounts of warps are required to gain 4-star and 5-star.
For 4-star pity, every event needs 10 warps to gain a guaranteed 4-star. However, 5-star pity requires different amounts of warps for different events, as mentioned below.
- Character event Warp – 90 Warps
- Light Cone event Warp – 80 Warps
- Stellar Warp (permanent banner) – 90 Warps
- Departure Warp (starter banner) – 50 Warps
If a player doesn’t get a five-star in Light Cone Event Warp after 80 pulls, they will be guaranteed a five-star after the 80th pull. If the player is lucky enough, they may get the five-star before 80 pulls.
How to count Pity?
- You first need go to the banner you want to county the pity of, and then go to View Details section.
- You then need to head on to Records section where Warp records will be present. The number of warps present in the Records is the number of pity players have. This helps players know how close they are to a guaranteed 4-star or 5-star.
When does pity reset?
Every time a player earns a five-star, the pity system is reset for that particular banner kind. However, it will only reset for the particular banner type which the player got the five-star from.
For example, if a player obtains a five-star from Stellar Warp, the pity for any banner of that banner type is reset. However, it won’t have an impact on the pity of Character and Light Cone event Warps.
Banner pull rates
The banner pull rates in percentage for different Event warps are as shown in the below table.
Event Wrap | 4-star pull rate | 5-star pull rate (%) |
Character Event Warp | 5.1% | 0.6% |
Light Cone Event Warp | 6.6% | 0.8% |
Stellar Warp (permanent banner) | 5.1% | 0.6% |
Departure Warp (starter banner) | 5.1% | 0.6% |
The Character Event Warp has a 50/50 chance of having the featured character in the five-star drop. However, if you don’t get the featured character in this chance, the next drop will be guaranteed to bring you that character.
So, it will take a maximum of 180 pulls to obtain the featured character in the Character Event Warp. Similarly, it will take 160 pulls for Light cone Event Warp.
