One of the biggest films of 2023, Rebel Moon received a ton of attention throughout its glamorous marketing run. While the trailers left everyone impressed, some cinephiles pointed out elements in the movie that looked like they belonged in a Star Wars movie. Stuff like lightsaber-like blades and guns shooting red lasers.
This speculation led to the obvious question:
Is Rebel Moon A Star Wars Movie?
No, Rebel Moon is not a Star Wars film. That being said, the story of how Zack Snyder created Rebel Moon does have a tiny connection to George Lucas’ Star Wars universe.
In an interview with Empire, Snyder revealed that Rebel Moon evolved from an idea that he originally pitched to Lucasfilm. While working on Man of Steel, the filmmaker approached George Lucas’ studio and wanted to develop a Star Wars movie. He said to Empire,
“It was Seven Samurai in space. And a Star Wars movie was my original concept for it.”
However, due to several reasons, the idea didn’t go through. Referring to that, Snyder said,
“I knew it was a big ask, to be honest. But the deeper I got into it, I realised it was probably never going to be what I wanted.”
Years later, Snyder got the chance to set the idea in its own standalone universe, which led to the birth of Rebel Moon.
So, if Rebel Moon looks like it draws inspiration from Stars Wars, it’s because its core idea was originally conceptualized as a Star Wars movie. However, Rebel Moon is unrelated to the Star Wars universe.
