Rundisc, a France-based indie game studio, showcased a detailed look at Chants of Sennaar, their puzzle-based action-adventure title revolving around the myth of the Tower of Babel.
Inspired by the style of European comics in the 70s and 80s, Chants of Sennaar offers players a unique opportunity to dive into the character of a strange traveler passing through an unknown city, meeting different kinds of people. You navigate through complicated and at times, illegible chaos of people who stem from different upbringings, cultures, languages, and societies. In your journey up the city, you meet five key types of people who have co-existed with each other for centuries without understanding each other. Your task then becomes finding ways to bring peace and harmony to this unnamed city.
The game follows most of the narrative arc of the Tower of Babel, with the in-game characters trying to build a tower to reach heaven. This displeases the gods who curse them to speak different languages so they can’t understand each other and leave their collective mission. The different languages spoken by different kinds of NPCs in the game serve as essential clues to solve a variety of puzzles. Apart from these language-based puzzles, players can interact with various things in the environment and talk to several people to complete the gameplay.
The purpose of the Chants of Sennaar’s protagonist is to restore peace amongst the highly divided population of the city. The game will feature certain elements of platforming, and stealth, however, it is unlikely that the game will include any action or fighting sequences. According to Thomas Panuel and Julien Moya, the developers, the key message of the game is peace, and finding applicable and alternative solutions to resolve the in-game conflict rather than engaging in violence.
Chants of Sennaar is set to release on September 5 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows.
