Creative Director of Insomniac Games and its latest release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Bryan Intihar has subtly hinted towards the possibility of Spider-Man 3.
While talking to the host of Friends Per Second podcast, he hinted towards the third mainline entry (fourth overall) in the series being under works. He also likened their commercially successful Spider-games series to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, claiming:
“If Spider-Man 1 (2018) was like our Iron Man, and Spider-Man 2 was like a (Captain America) Civil War… where logically do we go from there?“
This comparison between MCU and Insomniac’s Spider-saga can offer deeper insight. Iron Man (2008) was the very first movie that officially started the era of Feige-led MCU. Likening Spider-Man 2 to Captain America: Civil War can indicate the beginning of a new phase, as the Civil War kicked off the MCU’s third phase.
If Spider-Man 2 is the Civil War of Insomniac’s series, it could point towards Spider-Man 3 being the Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame for the game franchise. It could easily mean a bigger scope, higher stakes, more powerful enemies, and a larger storyline.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on October 20, 2023, and has already broken all sales records for PlayStation Studios game. With over 2.5 million copies sold within the first 24 hours, Insomniac’s latest title has clearly gained mass commercial success. Spider-Man 2 broke not only the sales records, but also turned out to be an unprecedented technological marvel. With fast travel to various sections of the map loading at 1.33 seconds and switching between two protagonists of the game in record time, Spider-Man 2 was lauded by all.
Insomniac May Potentially Release A Standalone Venom Game
After the launch of Spider-Man 2, major anti-hero character Venom attracted a lot of attention. The developers even went as far to say that they will listen to their fans, indicating that they will create a Venom standalone game. It’s possible that Insomniac will come out with a smaller standalone Venom game, like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, to satiate the players’ demands for an all-out raging and stomping Venom title.
After the immense success of Spider-Man 2, it’s highly likely that Insomniac will be focusing their attention of Spider-Man 3. The latest title leaves sufficient room in terms of story and characters. It won’t be a surprising to learn if Insomniac announces Spider-Man 3 (or Venom standalone game) in the next year, considering a two-three year gap between their series titles.
