Clay, a 23-year-old Minecraft streamer popularly known as Dream, has recently decided to put his mask back on for livestreams, owing to the backlash and trolling he faced after revealing his face earlier this year.
American YouTuber Dream has been one of Minecraft’s most popular streamers for years. In the past, he had always put on an iconic smiley-face mask in order to hide his identity. In 2022 however, he decided to reveal his face to his fans for the first time, planning on branching out into doing more hands-on real-life content.
Once he posted his pictures and started posting videos without the mask, his fans started making fun of his appearance and began downvoting and disliking his streams. People started bullying the streamer online, some claiming that he looked like the Rumpelstiltskin from the Shrek film franchise. Things quickly took a dark turn, with some people even creating a Twitter hashtag #hesugly which, promptly caught attention and reached the top of the charts in the US, hours after he revealed his face.
On June 9, Dream took to YouTube again, with the intention of permanently hiding his face in the upcoming videos. He claimed that his face reveal backfired, with subscribers dropping out, people continuing to bully him due to his appearance, and his videos getting lesser and lesser likes. He also stated that he would be deleting all the pictures and videos he had created without his mask. In the video, he also explained that his new mask, identical to the one he used before, is designed by a professional company that has designed and created Batman, Spider-Man, and other superhero masks for film productions.
The video is presented as a skit, where Dream’s friends urge him to put the mask back on, claiming that they are losing followers and money. This shows that the streamer did not take the hate spewed by the internet seriously. Still, his decision to put the mask back on clearly indicates some kind of loss for him and reveals the serious ugly face of insensitiveness of the online gaming community.
