Seems like Bioware will be going back to its roots with the rumored “no open-world” concept with Mass Effect 5. Although Bioware took the open-world approach with 2017 Mass Effect Andromeda, it seems like they will go back to their hub world design with the next entry in the series.
According to video game journalist and podcaster Jez Corden, Bioware will be ditching their attempts to make the new Mass Effect title an open-world game and going back to its classic format. In Xbox Two Podcast Ep 282, Corden explains, “I don’t know if that’s accurate 100% but it’s an industry rumor.” Furthermore, he also adds, “If Mass Effect goes back to doing exactly what it’s known for, it will be celebrated.”
This conversation came as a tangent while Corden and Rand Al Thor were talking about the recent launch of Starfield.

This supposed rumor has been sitting well with fans as most of them seem to be excited about this new change. The fans claim that the storyline and setting are much more important factors than a game being just open-world. This holds true more so for the Mass Effect franchise, which garnered praise with its space opera setting that banks on telling engaging and emotional stories involving a plethora of well-written characters.

Open world or not, some fans hope that they include the combat elements from Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. The snappy combat and movement mechanics were some of the noteworthy mentions from the otherwise lackluster launches from Bioware.
Is there a Mass Effect 5 release date?
No, we currently have no official information regarding the release window of the next Mass Effect entry. Last communicated in a blog by Bioware general manager Gary McKay in June 2023, Mass Effect 5 is still in its pre-production stage.
Since the teaser trailer for the next Mass Effect title dropped at The Game Awards 2020, we haven’t heard much about the game. Going by contemporary AAA development standards, the next entry isn’t launching until at least 2027.
While we can not totally fact-check Corden’s claim about the non-openworld nature of the game, one thing is for sure, people are definitely looking forward to what the new Mass Effect brings to the table.
