Redfall is set to be released on May 2, 2023, according to a recent announcement from Microsoft Gaming’s Xbox Direct. While the title will be available on PC and Xbox Series X/S, there is no PlayStation version as of yet. It is highly likely that the game might never see a release on PS4 and PS5. This is owing to Microsoft’s acquisition of Arkane Studios and its parent company Bethesda, which resulted in the cancellation of Redfall’s PS5 version that was in development.
Redfall, the upcoming co-op shooter from Arkane, has sparked a lot of interest among gamers. Arkane hopes to create an amazing experience for players by drawing inspiration from popular games such as Dishonoured 2, Prey, and Deathloop. The makers of Redfall have blended aspects from Dungeons & Dragons and Far Cry 2 into the game’s open environment and cooperative gameplay. Unfortunately, PlayStation players will have to sit this one out, at least for the time being.
While an agreement between Microsoft and Sony to bring Redfall to PlayStation consoles in the future is possible, there is no evidence to support this hypothesis. Redfall is unlikely to be exceptional in this regard, as Xbox has revealed that three future Bethesda titles, not including Redfall, would most likely be platform exclusives.
The alleged cancellation of a PlayStation 5 version of Redfall raises concerns about future exclusivity and Microsoft’s plans for Activision Blizzard’s games portfolio. Although Microsoft has stated that the acquisition is primarily intended to strengthen the Xbox mobile games offering, some may speculate that there are other factors at work.
Xbox has offered Nintendo and Sony 10-year commitments to bring the Call of Duty brand on their respective systems. However, once these obligations are met, it’s possible that Xbox’s position on exclusivity will shift. According to recent Microsoft comments, Sony should develop its own Call of Duty game.
