One of the most dangerous yet rewarding locations in the Blighter Village in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Whispering Depths. This cave is crawling with some dangerous enemies and a boss that will give you a run for your gold especially when you encounter it in Act 1 early game. The Whispering Depths is a major location for the quest ‘Search the Cellar’.
It is certainly not a hospitable location to explore especially at lower levels. The cave is home to several spiders who can deal quite a bit of damage. This is also a tricky cave system, so navigating it can be both confusing and dangerous. So, here is a guide to help you get through the Whispering Depths in Baldur’s Gate 3 in as few pieces as possible.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Whispering Depths location
The Whispering Depths is a cave system found underneath the Blighted village. You can access the cave as early as Act 1 through a well found in the middle of the village. The well is found right next to the waypoint.
When you first interact with the well you get the option of throwing a coin down it which reveals that the bottom is rocky rather than watery. You can climb down a bucket attached to the well to reach the Whispering Depths. You’ll need to pass a perception check to accomplish this though.
Alternately, you can also access the Whispering Depths through a blacksmith’s house in the Blighted Village near the very same waypoint.
Navigating through the Whispering Depths in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Whispering Depths has several creatures who see your party as quite the hearty meal. So, treading with caution is prudent if you are approaching the cave early in the game. As soon as you reach the location, you’ll find quite a few skeletons and carcasses lying about. This is not a good sign and an omen of the things to come. If you make enough noise at the entrance, you will immediately attract the attention of the Ettercap and the Phase Spiders. If you don’t have the right party or the resources to match, this can be a really tough fight.
Another hurdle that you’ll encounter immediately upon entering is the countless spider webs that dot the entire map. Passing through these webs can often leave your characters with the Enwebbed status which can cause all kinds of troubles during combat. It is best to stay away from the webs as much as possible and stick to shadows to not attract unwanted attention.
You can sneak up on solitary enemies to take them out. But, if you fail to do so, you’ll end up bringing all the enemies in the area right to your location. Both the phase spider and Ettercaps have a pattern of patrolling; you can watch them to plan your movements. It is also a great idea to ungroup if you are just looking for specific loot such as the Dark Amethyst used to open the Necromancy of Thay. Astarion is a great option for such missions.
The cave system is divided into levels which get progressively darker as you go deeper. At higher levels, the enemies can be dealt with by using the Shove action or the Eldritch Blast to throw them off of bridges and cliffs.

One of these crates has this unique boots that will make your character immune to Enwebbed status.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Whispering Depths: Phase Spider Matriarch boss
The Phase Spider Matriarch is a boss encountered in the Whispering Depths. This is a tough boss to face early game. The most difficult part is dealing with the many phase spiders that come to her aid during battle. The Phase Spider Matriarch is most lethal at the lower level where she has an army of spiders to command along with hatchlings spawning regularly.
You can rely on fire-based spells to dispatch all the spiders including the boss. But you’ll need to get rid of the boss as early as possible because more spiders mean more trouble to deal with as the battle progresses. Alternately, you can sneak up on the Phase Spider Matriarch in the upper levels and use a Warlock’s Eldritch Blast to rid of her when she standing next to a cliff. Defeating her in either way will allow you to access the unique loot Poisoner’s Robe which boosts poison spells.
Dark Amethyst
This precious keystone can be found in the lowest level of the Whispering Depths at coordinates X-561, and Y-357. You can sneak your way past all the enemies to acquire this gem without needing to engage in battle if you aren’t ready early game. The Spider Matriarch is usually found guarding the Amethyst.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Whispering Depths: Way to Underdark
If you head southwest from the Dark Amethyst’s location you can find a waypoint. There is a hole (X-557, Y- 366) right next to the waypoint which is actually an easy way to reach Underdark although not a healthy one. You’ll need to use the Feather Fall spell to jump and survive the fall. Once you’ve reached the Underdark even with the spell, your character will remark that their bones are broken.
