Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has a deep and intricate Job system if you want to build a party that can handle anything the game throws at you. There are actually 20 distinct Jobs in the game, which are basically split into regular ones and the special ones.

The cool thing is that most regular jobs are open to all your playable characters. However, those special jobs are unique to specific individuals and are tied right into their own progression. Based on what we’ve seen, this game could be considered one of the best games of 2025.

Unlocking all these different roles is mainly about leveling up your current jobs. You do this by stacking up JP (Job Points), which you earn every time a character performs an action in battle. The faster you act, the faster those JPs pile up, letting you move quickly through the Job Tree.

Other Story CharactersVariesOther special characters like Cloud and Construct 8 have their own unique jobs and abilities that are unlocked at default

You’ll find that some abilities can make your progress much faster. For example, the Squire’s JP Boost support ability is absolutely vital because it maximizes the JP you gain from any action. This makes it a cornerstone for efficient character development. As you get deeper into the game, you’ll also notice that how useful a job is can depend on what equipment is available in the story. This is good, even if you have to deal with Denuvo.

If you want to build a party that can actually handle Chapter 1 and beyond, unlocking and mastering the various Jobs is absolutely key. The game throws 20 regular Jobs and a bunch of special character-specific Jobs at you, but there are a few you need to focus on early on because of their seriously potent abilities and how easy it is to gear them up.

The Squire might be the starting class for most of your characters, but seriously, don’t sleep on it. Its utility is fantastic all the way through, especially when you use its skills to help power-level other classes. The Squire’s action ability set, “Fundamentals,” often stays as a secondary command even late in the game. You’ve got key action abilities like “Focus,” which not only boosts your physical attack but is also a fast command for quickly gaining experience.

Next up, the Chemist is crucial for keeping your party alive, especially in Chapter 1. Their main action abilities, “Potion” and “Phoenix Down,” are essential for basic team survival. The reaction ability “Auto-Potion” gives you a high chance to automatically heal yourself when damaged, which really helps the Chemist survive as an early-game healer.

The Monk is arguably one of the best overall classes in the game, dishing out high damage, offering great utility, and providing several cross-class skills that are just essential. Sure, some of the more powerful abilities require a solid JP investment, but getting early access to skills like “Aura Blast” and “Shockwave” gives you great ranged physical attacks.

Finally, the Black Mage, when properly geared and leveled, can be your heaviest damage dealer in the early stages. By learning elemental spells like “Fire,” “Thunder,” and “Blizzard,” you cover all your elemental bases, with “Thunder” being particularly effective against a wide range of common creatures.

These early-game Jobs, with their easy-to-get gear and seriously potent abilities, give you a rock-solid foundation for tackling all the challenges in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. So make sure to have the best jobs ready to go.
