A fight between two parties in Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles
Square Enix

Does Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles have Denuvo?

So, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is in hot water because Square has a pattern of using Denuvo Anti-Tamper, which is a third-party DRM solution. This has already sparked a big discussion among players, mainly because they’re worried about how it might affect the game’s performance, its ability to be modded, and what it means for long-term ownership.

Denuvo’s whole job is to stop unauthorized copies and piracy, especially when a game first launches. It works by putting anti-tamper stuff into the game’s files, making it a lot harder for people to create cracked versions. The idea is that the publisher hits its initial sales goals before piracy gets out of control.

It turns out Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will definitely include Denuvo Anti-Tamper DRM on the PC platform. Honestly, Denuvo always kicks off a huge debate in the PC gaming community, and people are already talking about how it might hit performance, mess with modding, and what it means for owning the game long-term.

Over on the Steam forums, some folks are saying they’ll hold off on buying until the DRM is potentially removed after launch, while others are arguing that if Denuvo is implemented smartly, it might not be a huge issue on modern PCs. The Denuvo drama is nothing new; we’ve seen this play out with a ton of other big game launches that use this technology. For us day-one players, the main things we worry about are really practical. We’re going to be keeping a close eye on the stability of frame times in graphically intense scenes, like those huge battles with lots of units, crazy weather effects, or complex spell animations. We’ll also be checking load times between battles and cutscenes to see if there’s any noticeable slowdown.

If you’re like me and love community mods, you’ll be looking for any signs that the game’s files are getting locked down because of the DRM. Publishers usually slap Denuvo to slow down pirates during that crucial initial sales window. To be fair, it’s also a pretty common (though not guaranteed) practice to have the tech removed a few months down the line once the initial sales frenzy has passed.

When Will Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Take Down Its Denuvo

Just like a bunch of other Square Enix games, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is hitting the PC with Denuvo Anti-Tamper DRM slapped on it. Nobody likes Denuvo, but here’s the good news: there’s a pretty strong pattern of Square Enix yanking that protection after a little while. If you look at online discussions, lots of users are pointing to a typical timeframe of about six months before Denuvo gets the boot from their titles.

This totally lines up with what we saw for games like Final Fantasy XVI and Vision of Mana, where Denuvo was taken out after roughly half a year. I mean, some people remember it sticking around for a whole year, but the recent trend suggests that a shorter window is what you can expect now. Cronos: The New Dawn also dealt with Denuvo on release, so Denuvo is nothing new.

The logic behind this move is usually due to the high monthly fees Denuvo charges for its license. Publishers typically use Denuvo to protect those critical initial sales right around launch, making sure they maximize revenue when demand is highest and pirated copies are less available. Once that initial surge dies down, and the cost of keeping the Denuvo license just doesn’t make financial sense anymore, it’s actually smarter for the publisher to remove it.

Not only does this save them money on ongoing expenses, but it also makes a lot of PC gamers happy, since many of us really hate Denuvo because of the potential performance hit and the issues it raises with long-term ownership. So, if you’re planning on buying Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on PC, you can reasonably expect it to be Denuvo-free around March 2026; that’s about six months after its September 30 release. It seems like a pretty safe bet based on how they’ve been handling things lately.

What Anti-piracy Measures Does Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Have?

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will use Denuvo Anti-Tamper as its main anti-piracy protection. The minute Denuvo is involved, like Denuvo in Metal Gear Solid Delta, it always kicks off a huge conversation among PC gamers about whether it’ll mess with performance, how it affects modding, and what it means for owning the game long-term. Publishers usually use Denuvo to really crack down on piracy right at launch, which is when they want to maximize sales.

That being said, it’s pretty common for some games to have Denuvo removed a few months after release once those initial sales have peaked. The news about Denuvo immediately sparked some pretty strong reactions in community forums. You’ve got some players who are straight-up deciding to hold off on buying it until the anti-tamper tech is hopefully gone.

Square Enix has a track record of using Denuvo in a lot of their titles, so its inclusion in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles isn’t surprising to most people. Despite all the back-and-forth about whether Denuvo is even worth it, major publishers keep choosing it as their anti-piracy solution. The prevailing sentiment among many players, especially those who prefer to avoid Denuvo-protected games, is just to wait for the often-anticipated removal of the DRM.
