Magic plays a significant role in Dragon’s Dogma 2, especially when your character pursues the Sorcerer vocation. However, the powers you obtain from vocations may be capped unless you make arrangements with the masters of your craft. Unfortunately, the Sorcerer Maister is difficult to find, and in no hurry to impart his wisdom.
Where to Find the Sorcerer Maister in Dragon’s Dogma 2
You unlock the Sorcerer vocation by clearing the optional Vocation Frustration quest. Once you do that, you can immediately start learning new skills and abilities relevant to that vocation. However, the Sorcerer Maister can take your power to the next level. To find the Sorcerer Maister, meet him at his dwelling in Checkpoint Rest Town.

If you have already been to Checkpoint Rest Town, you may have met the Sorcerer Maister already without realizing it. He is an arrogant recluse named Myrddin. He lives on a hill and emerges from his home in the morning, at which point he will make mean-spirited comments about your decorum.
Though it’s not obvious, Myrddin’s comments are a reference to your attire. His snobbishness means your first order of business, before you even head to the town, is to find something more suitable to wear.

Preparing to Meet the Sorcerer Maister
It’s possible there are multiple options that will meet with Myrddin’s approval. The option I know works is the courtly attire you find in a treasure chest near the back of Vernworth Hall. A quest called The Stolen Throne directs you to it. See the above map screenshot for its precise location.

Equip the Courtly Tunic and Courtly Breeches and head to Checkpoint Rest Town. When you arrive, go uphill to meet with Myrddin. He will talk to you, now that your appearance meets his high standards. However, he won’t agree to instruct you unless you first bring him several magical tomes.

The Sorcerer Maister Offers a New Quest
When you talk to Myrddin inside his home, the conversation activates a new quest, The Sorcerer’s Appraisal. To complete that quest and win the Sorcerer Maister’s approval, you need to collect several magical tomes from a list. The possibilities are:
- Let There Be Light
- Fulminous Shield
- Towering Earth
- Nation’s Death Knell
- Howling Blizzard
Myrddin lets you know he doesn’t need to acquire all five of them. Actually, three will suffice. However, you shouldn’t hand over any ‘real’ grimoires at all. Forgeries work fine, and that way you can keep the originals for later use.

Where to Gather Grimoires for Myrddin
To find the grimoires Myrddin seeks and complete The Sorcerer’s Appraisal quest, you’ll have to travel to a few locations. The first one is close at hand.
Let There Be Light is available upstairs in Myrddin’s library. One of your pawns will likely mention it if you leave the building without claiming it. You should try to grab the grimoire from the table when your host is not in the room. Otherwise, he may attack you. If Myrddin attacks, just exit his house. When you return, Myrddin will be friendly again. He’ll even ask about any grimoires you may have found.
If you don’t turn over any volumes when you talk to Myrddin again after accepting his quest, he gives you a hint: you can find one of them in Melve. That grimoire in question is the Fulminous Shield. Purchase it from the merchant who is waiting just through the ruined archway as you first arrive in that town. The cost is 5000 G. He also sells a few other items you may find of general interest, including the Makeshift Gaol Key for 3000 G. Make sure to buy one.
Towering Earth is held by the Magistrate in Vernworth. His precise location depends on which quests you have completed. If you cleared The Caged Magistrate, look for him in The Gracious Hand’s Vaults, in the slums. You would have accessed and explored them while clearing the The Heel of History quest. Otherwise, you should find the character still locked in a prison cell beneath Vernworth Castle Gaol Tower. You can visit him there without accepting the relevant quest, but you’ll have to sneak past the patrolling guards. Make sure to rest at an inn or inside your house before you make your high-risk journey into the tower’s dungeon, just in case things go very wrong. I made the mistake of not taking that precaution and regretted my oversight. The prisoner you seek is in the first cell on the right on the lowest level. I used a Makeshift Gaol Key so I could open and enter the cell.

If you have grabbed the above three grimoires, now you have enough to satisfy Myrddin. Remember to have Ibrahim make forgeries at his shop in Checkpoint Rest Town. The cost for each forgery is 6000 G, and you have to create them one at a time. Note that they each come away with slightly different names that make it easy to see which ones are forgeries. Turn them over to Myrddin to receive your reward: 2700 XP and the unique Myrddin’s Chronicle grimoire. It contains powerful Maelstrom magic.
If you want to hand over five all five grimoire forgeries instead of the minimum three, feel free to do so. However, you’ll need to venture into more dangerous regions first. I suggest that instead, you do only the minimum required and tell him you shall “search no more.” Then, you should stow your genuine grimoires in a chest back at your house so you don’t accidentally lose them. You will need them again later to complete the optional Spellbound quest.
