When you are on the bridge of your ship in Helldivers 2, you can check the current Galactic War progress via the Galactic War table, which can be found near the Hellpods at the front of the ship.
Here, you will be presented with all the data on how well the war effort is on certain sectors and the planets within it. Every sector will have its own liberation meter that goes from 0% to 100%. It is influenced by the liberation of the planets within that particular sector.
How The Galactic War Progress Works In Helldivers 2
The liberation progress of a given sector is influenced by all players doing missions in that sector. Once the sector is fully liberated, it will be locked and a new adjacent sector will be opened up. The concept is that new sectors and planets get unlocked for all players in the game based on how much effort players collectively put into liberating previous sectors.
This creates a unique dynamic as the players set the pace of new sectors and planets being unlocked rather than the whole progress being time-gated. Not only that, but developers also watch and monitor the progress. They can make it harder to liberate a sector or easier based on the pace by adding certain modifiers.

Developers can also issue Major and Personal Orders based on how the galaxy is being liberated. Major Orders ask all players to go to certain planets to do certain missions, which affect the Galactic War progress majorly. Personal Orders are meant for you and your squad, and it gives you an objective to achieve in a specific way to complete the order.
Completing missions on a higher difficulty setting makes the liberation progress increase at a higher rate. But just one Helldiver trying to liberate a sector will never work even if it’s on the hardest difficulty. The Helldivers 2 Galactic War progress is a team effort that brings the whole community to a united goal – spreading democracy across the galaxy.
