Baldur’s Gate 3 received its fourth hotfix on August 16. However, owing to a certain build error, players were experiencing game crash as well as inability to load the save files they had created after the update had rolled out.
The patch was designed to tackle several issues players were facing, such as resource restoration, unwarranted crashes, and issues with reconnecting in split-screen co-op mode. However, soon after release, it was noticed that the new patch created more issues, particularly when players tried to manually save files and load them afterwards. To address these issues, Larian Studios temporarily rolled the update back and it was eventually re-released later during the day.

Fans of Baldur’s Gate 3 were notably disappointed with the errors. As a response, Larian Studios issued an apology and assured players that it is making changes to its update deployment strategy. The developer claims to have put a thorough quality assessment pipeline in place to ensure that errors like these do not resurface. Larian Studios believes this unfortunate incident happened during the busiest time of the day and affected a high number of players.
According to the company,
“(While) Hotfix 4 went through a rigorous QA pipeline and was confirmed as a candidate for release… the version that was cooked was unfortunately plagued by compiler corruption.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 hotfix #4 rolled back due to compiler corruption issues
According to the Baldur’s Gate 3 developer, this compiler corruption caused certain exceptions that usually wouldn’t cause any issues to trigger crashes. The developer notes that compiler issues such as these are extremely rare and will not happen again.
To ensure that the upcoming hotfixes are up to the mark, the developer has stated that they will run each and every update or patch – no matter how big or small – through an extensive and thorough quality assessment pipeline. Based on the developer comments, this new quality assessment process will include automated testing, save-game compatibility testing, a global in-house team for QA and various unit tests.
In other news, the BG3 developer has stated that the first major patch for the game, yet to arrive, will include more than a thousand adjustments and fixes. Furthermore, the developer has also stated that it is working on a system to allow gamers to change the appearance of their characters mid-game, a feature highly demanded by the fans.
We'd like to thank everyone for their patience as we worked out what went wrong this time. You're the best. As a reminder, the PlayStation 5 and Mac versions of BG3 will feature all of the tweaks & improvements that come to PC.
