Demon Slayer season 3 episode 3 returns to Koyoharu Gotouge’s world of demons and Hashiras as the stakes of the plot heighten. On April 23, 2023, at 11:15 p.m. JST, a new episode debuted, giving viewers their first look at the isolated and enigmatic Swordsmith Village that Tanjiro visited following his conflict with Upper Moon Daki and Gyutaro.
The third episode of Demon Slayer season 3 continued the Swordsmith Village arc, which is planned to span chapters 98 to 127 of the manga. Depicting Tanjiro’s adventures in this village as the demons begin attacking, following the finding of the ancient sword, episode 45 of the Demon Slayer anime will therefore highlight the events of this arc.

Kotetsu and Tanjiro Kamado are astonished when a sword’s hilt pops out of the Yoriichi Type Zero that has been damaged. Tanjiro refuses to accept the sword despite Kotetsu’s pleading, upholding his principles. But the younger boy’s persuasiveness convinces the Demon Slayer, and Tanjiro gives up and draws the blade.
Suddenly, the two are interrupted by the abrupt appearance of Hotaru Haganezuka who overpowers them and takes the sword. What follows is comedy typical of Demon Slayer, where Kozo Kanamuri tickles Hotaru and causes him to collapse.

The next day, Tanjiro meets with Genya Shinazugawa to talk about Hotaru’s sword training. Tanjiro’s presence infuriates the latter, who makes attempts at friendliness and tries to get him to go. Tanjiro, who possesses the empathy and emotional intelligence of a traditional shonen protagonist, is pained as he thinks about the persistence of his fellow Demon Slayer’s fury.
At the end of the segment, the two Upper Moons Gyokko and Hantengu appear, and while Upper Moon Five Gyokko has already shown his viciousness by claiming his first victim, Hantengu seems like a cowering coward who does not appear remarkable in terms of his battle prowess.

This soon changes, however, as the scene cuts to the interaction between Tanjiro Kamado, Muichiro Tokito and Nezuko. As the Mist Hashira confronts the protagonist regarding the location of Kozo, his new swordsmith, the conversation is soon interrupted by the appearance of Hantengu. Still cowering, the Upper Moon Four dodges the demon slayer’s attacks and begs them not to hurt him. This is all a façade however, and Tanjiro, being a veteran from his former battle with Daki and Gyutaro is aware of this.
Hantengu is split into pieces by the attack, and in a horrific twist, the demon slayers are forced to face not one but two aspects of the powerful demon. The two clones, Karaku and Sekido join the fight individually. While the former blasts Muichiro out, the latter strikes Tanjiro with a lightning-based attack and causes him to be knocked out. Genya Shinazugawa is soon spotted aiming a gun at Sekido from the distance.

Genya’s efforts are futile however, despite landing a powerful blow. The tides turn, as Genya is impaled by the demon. Tanjiro, forced to hold his own against another minor bird-like demon, is unable to help as the episode cuts to where Muichiro is seen running through the woodlands after being blasted by Hantengu’s clone.
He spots Kotetsu being cornered by a demon and after a few moments of ethical deliberation on whether to save a seemingly insignificant life, he jumps into action. The chapter ends after Muichiro shows off his expert swordsmanship and cuts off the fish-demon’s arm.

The main characters of the Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village arc have all been presented, and it will be interesting to see how Genya and Muichiro have changed as a result of speaking with Tanjiro. Moreover, Tanjiro’s new power to sense enemies’ direction of attacking by their smell, as he discovered in the last chapter, will likely come in handy as viewers get to know about the sword and its secrets and his reasons for having arrived arrived at the Swordsmith Village in the first place.
