Monster Hunter Rise – For the Combat
Release Date | March 2021 |
Developer | Capcom |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Switch |
It helps that Capcom is the developer/publisher behind both the games, and the similarities are there for everyone to see. And while Monster Hunter is an established franchise with several entries under its belt, we have picked the most successful and the most recent title.
Both Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Rise have big, intimidating monsters, with multiple weapons and combat options to slay them. In DD2, you have your pawns helping you out, while in Monster Hunter Rise you have the option of calling in your friends for an adrenaline-filled session of monster slaying.
An honorable mention also goes to Wild Hearts, again from the same developer/publisher, with a similar monster-slaying central theme.
Dragon Age: Inquisition – For the World-Building
Release Date | November 2014 |
Developer | BioWare |
Platforms | PC, PS4, Xbox One |
There are a lot of similarities to how the main character starts off in both Dragon Age Inqusition and Dragon’s Dogma 2. You play a central character who is unique and sort of ‘chosen’, making you the key to the goings-on in the world around you. Both games are high-fantasy, with dragons and other fantastical creatures that inhabit the world along with humans, and in case of Dragon’s Age, several other races.
The protagonist in Dragon Age is also accompanied by up to 3 different characters with their own diverse builds that can potentially complement each other. It’s similar to how you create and build the pawn in a way to supplement your character class in DD2.
GreedFall – For the Story
Release Date | September 2019 |
Developer | Spiders |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Dragon’s Dogma 2 holds an intriguing premise at its core: You are the Arisen, but there is also the False Arisen who has usurped the throne. The two kingdoms in DD2 also refer and look upon you and the pawns differently. Greedfall takes all of these intricacies and weaves a great narrative around those.
In Greedfall, as you travel across the huge island of Teer Fradee, you come across several different factions. Depending upon how you interact with them and the choices you make, you either bring these factions to your side or make them hostile. All this is laid upon a personal urgency to finding a cure for your cousin while simultaneously having you rule an island, requiring you to engage with these different factions.
All of this adds up into a pretty involving and consistently good story. And if that’s what got you going in Vermund, you will likely spend a good amount of time in Teer Fradee as well.
Stranger of Paradise : Final Fantasy Origin – For the Build Variety
Release Date | March 2022 |
Developer | Team Ninja / Square Enix |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
In Dragon’s Dogma 2, you have a set number of starting vocations, and you unlock others as you progress through the game. There is also the possibility of mixing and matching traits of several vocations. Final Fantasy Origin does the exact same thing, but much better.
There are a dizzying number of jobs that you unlock in Stranger of Paradise along with combinations of those which open up even more advanced and expert level jobs. Each of them having their own special skills and abilities which you can switch to effortlessly once you have unlocked them. The combat is also great – responsive and tight.
If you can get over the surprisingly bland graphics, there is a lot of fun to be derived out of this game. If you enjoyed the possibilities of the Mystic Spearhand and the Trickster, it is worth giving Strangers of Paradise a shot.
Outer Worlds – For the Side Quests
Release Date | October 2019 |
Developer | Obsidian Entertainment / Virtuos |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Switch |
Picture this: The protagonist gradually partners up with different characters that he comes across in a wild and unforgiving world filled with dangerous creatures.
Now, imagine all of that happening in space, which is exactly what Outer Worlds is all about. It helps that the game comes with some of the most engaging and wildly entertaining side quests. It is able to keep a consistently funny, satirical tongue-in-cheek tone across the many interactions with NPCs.
If you loved stumbling across side quests in DD2 that led you into a completely different direction and kept you exploring more for similar encounters, Outer Worlds is an RPG gem you must try.
Elden Ring – For the Exploration
Release Date | February 2022 |
Developer | FromSoftware Inc |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
In Dragon’s Dogma 2, once you move out of the safety of your settlement, there is no telling what you may run into. Even travel by carriages is not safe, as they are likely to be attacked by thieves or goblins. This single aspect has brought the thrill of exploration back to a genre that has been marked by convenient fast travel and a checklist of things to do. And the same thrill of exploration is also what sets The Lands Between in Elden Ring apart from the others in this genre.
There are things to discover on your own- catacombs that go several levels deep, caves that hold treasures that can make a huge difference to your build, and a day-night cycle like in DD2 with some monsters and bosses that spawn only at night. If for some reason you have finished Dragon’s Dogma 2 but have not got to playing Elden Ring, now’s the time what with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC also planned for launch in late June.
And that is the list of 6 games like Dragon’s Dogma 2. Meanwhile, if you are looking at closing some end game content in DD2, you can check out our comprehensive Dragon’s Dogma 2 quests and NPC guides section.
