Larian Studios, the company that made Baldur’s Gate 3 game, said it considered making a Baldur’s Gate 4 but did not because it didn’t feel inspired enough. It’s something you don’t expect to hear about because they were so adamant about being done with the series, but it’s nice to know they tried.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Adam Smith, the narrative director for Baldur’s Gate 3, shared that the team believed they had successfully conveyed their intended story in the game. Following the completion of Baldur’s Gate 3, they considered potential concepts for Baldur’s Gate 4, but these ideas didn’t generate the same level of enthusiasm among the development team.

We tried to think of ideas for Baldur’s Gate 4, but we had trouble finding inspiration and passion for the project. As a result, we decided to focus on other initiatives.
“For us, we didn’t have anything unfinished that we wanted to say, we wanted to move on to other worlds. And we tried, we did start pushing around ideas for Baldur’s Gate 4, and they didn’t excite us, we didn’t have the fire. It feels like it should have been a harder decision than it was, but it wasn’t,”

This creative liberty is an important principle at Larian Studios. Smith emphasized that the studio values making games they truly care about, rather than just seeking financial success. He said that not choosing to make Baldur’s Gate 4 might seem like a difficult decision, but it wasn’t. It was a clear choice based on their recognition that they didn’t have the required passion.
The emphasis on passion stretches beyond Baldur’s Gate 4. Earlier this year, Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, disclosed that the studio had contemplated creating DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3 but ultimately decided against it due to similar creative concerns. Smith explained that the team did not want to develop DLC that simply revisited existing content. Although they had talked about the DLC, it would have been very different. The main focus was avoiding reusing old content or characters, as the team believed they had already told the stories they wanted to tell.
Larian Studios has decided not to be involved in Baldur’s Gate 4, leaving the franchise’s future uncertain. Wizards of the Coast, the publisher, may collaborate with another developer to carry on the Baldur’s Gate series. It seems that Baldur’s Gate 3 is the concluding installment from Larian Studios’ point of view.
