If you’re jumping into Megabonk, the first thing you’re going to want to do is figure out your character. The game starts you off with a couple of guys, Fox and Sir Oofie, but the real fun starts when you unlock the rest of the crew.
Each character has their own unique weapon and passive skill, so finding the right one for your playstyle is a big part of the game. To unlock more characters, you’re going to need to hit certain in-game goals, and some of them are pretty wild. If this game remains fun, it may become one of the best games on PC of all time.
All Characters and How to Unlock Them in Megabonk

Some characters in Megabonk are all about grinding. To get Calcium, you’ll need to defeat 1,000 Skeletons, and if you want Ogre, you’ll have to take down a whopping 15,000 Goblins. The table below goes over what you need to get each character.
Character | How to Unlock |
---|---|
Fox | Starting character. Available by default. |
Sir Oofie | Starting character. Available by default. |
Calcium | Kill 1,000 Skeletons. |
Megachad | Get the Damage Tome to Level 7 and obtain the Aura weapon. |

Once you’ve met the requirements, you’ll still need to buy the character with “Silver,” which you earn by playing the game. It’s a system that really encourages you to try new things, explore different regions, and get into all the different game modes Megabonk has to offer, but don’t rely on how luck works.
What Is the Best Strategy to Unlock Characters in Megabonk?

The most straightforward strategy is to start with the characters that require general progression in Megabonk. Sir Oofie and Fox are your starting characters, so you can just jump in and start grinding. After that, you’ll want to focus on characters like Calcium, who requires you to kill 1,000 skeletons, or Ogre, who needs you to kill 15,000 goblins and get the Axe weapon.
These characters’ unlock conditions are tied to common enemies and early-game weapons, which should help you build a solid foundation for your roster and give you more diverse gameplay options. As you keep going, the character unlocks become more tied to completing specific “Tiers” of maps or challenges.
For example, CL4NK is unlocked by completing Forest Tier 1, and Robinette by completing Forest Tier 2. It’s the same with Ninja, which is linked to completing Desert Tier 1, and Vlad to Desert Tier 2. This means that if you just play through the game’s biomes and difficulty levels, you’ll naturally unlock more characters. You’ll also want to actively work on completing challenges, since Spaceman requires you to complete six challenges, and Tony McZoom requires two. While this may not be a free game, it is better than many of the best free games on Steam.
Some characters, like Bush and Bandit, are found and defeated within specific regions, like the Forest and Desert, respectively. For these, you’ll want to keep an eye out while exploring. The unlock condition for Megachad (Damage Tome to Level 7 and Aura weapon) shows how important it is to upgrade your Tomes.
Not only do these global buffs make your current run stronger, but they also help you get new characters. Monke’s requirement to be “found and released” in the Forest also has an exploratory element to it, possibly a mini-quest or some kind of interaction you need to find.
Managing your Silver is also super important. Even after you complete a quest to unlock a character, you still need to spend Silver to add them to your playable roster. The game is pretty generous with Silver rewards for completing these quests, giving you a total of 37 Silver for all characters. However, some guides say the total cost to buy all the characters and their weapons can be more than that, so you’ll have to farm Silver from your runs.
The meta-progression, especially getting more weapon and tome slots by completing quests, will also help you indirectly by making your runs more effective for farming Silver and completing objectives. So, a balanced approach of targeting specific character quests, exploring maps, and building a strong meta-progression to generate Silver is the best way to go to get all the characters in Megabonk.
