All anime movies to watch out for in Summer 2023

With the Spring anime cycle drawing its curtains, July is about to welcome the heat and the fresh batch of anime movies and shows to commence Summer 2023. Unlike the range of anime TV series that has panned throughout the next season, the collection of anime movies for Summer 2023 is comparatively less. However, the season does offer some of the interesting releases. From Fate/strange Fake: Whisper of the Dawn to Precure All Stars F, here are all the anime movies that will be released between July to September.

Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō and other anime movie releases for Summer 2023

Fate/strange Fake: Whisper of the Dawn (July 2)

From the house of A-1 Pictures, Fate/strange Fake: Whisper of the Dawn revolves around a Grail War that was faultily based on the Third Grail War in Fuyuki by an US organization in the city of Snowfield. Although they were unable to copy each and every aspect of the Third Grail War, it facilitated the summoning of strange Servants.

Meanwhile, the Mage’s Association tasks Rohngall and his disciple Faldeus to report the status of the war. However, Faldeus is a spy working for the US organization who snipes Rohngall even though he knew that the latter was a puppet. Later, he reports that the Holy Grail War is real and is progressing. As the news wages disorder at the Clock Tower, Faldeus wishes to “adverstise” the plan to the Mage Association.

How Do You Live? (July 14)

Studio Ghibli’s upcoming philosophical team will be the final film by director Hayao Miyazaki. Inspired by the 1937 novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino, the film is said to have an original script by Miyazaki himself. As of now, only the staff members, release date, and runtime of the film, which is almost 125 minutes long, is said to have been revealed. Interestingly, the movie’s producer, Toshio Suzuki, and Miyazaki were both tired of the marketing strategies that are employed for the promotion of the film, which is why this film will take an unconventional route and will directly follow a theatrical release without any trailer or promotional content.

Mr. Osomatsu: The Soul’s Takoyaki Party and the Legendary Sleepover Party (July 21)

The second film of the comedy franchise, Studio Pierrot’s Mr. Osomatsu: The Soul’s Takoyaki Party and the Legendary Sleepover Party will continue with the adventures of the identical Matsuno brothers – Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu, and Todomatsu. As is suggestive from the title, the upcoming movie will see the mischievous sextuplets having fun with a “legendary” sleepover party that may or may not involve takoyakis.

Shin Jigen! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie Chōnōryoku Dai Kessen: Tobetobe Temakizushi (August 4)

Shirogumi Inc.’s Shin Jigen! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie Chōnōryoku Dai Kessen: Tobetobe Temakizushi is the 31st film in the franchise. Interestingly, for this film, all the characters will be seen in the much-anticipated 3DCG animation. As per the trailer, the movie will see titular character Shinhan gaining powers and embarking on an exciting journey on his own.

Sand Land (August 18)

Produced by Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima, Sand Land will deal with a socio-political premise. Following the years of water and disaster, the supplies of natural water have been dried up. When the king tries to capitalize on the personal water supply among the citizens, Sheriff Rao approaches the monarch to find a new solution to get water. As he sets out on a journey, he is accompanied by the demon Beelzebub and his friend, Thief.

After some inconveniences that angers the king, Sheriff is able to easily hold off against the army that the king sends. However, upon finding the water supply that they were looking for, they understand it comes under the king’s private reserves. As expected, all hell breaks loose with the Sheriff, his friends. and the demon waging war against the king, in which he loses far too much.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh part 2 (August, date TBA)

While the dates for the second part of The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh still unannounced, the film will continue with the events of the first film, which was released on December 20, 2022. The first installment takes place after the timeskip after the Kingdom of Liones’ victory against the Demon Clan. Now, Meliodas is married to Elizabeth and they have a son named Tristan. However, the song is unable to control his Demon and Goddess Clan powers altogether. On the other end, Elizabeth’s health deteriorates, and he is tasked to retrieve the former Holy Knight, Deathpierce.  

Part 2 may continue with Tristan being on a journey with his friends to retrieve the former Holy Knight, bringing a satisfying conclusion for the viewers.

City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust (September 8)

Subtitled as “The Final Chapter Begins,” the upcoming film by Sunrise and The Answer Studio from the City Hunter franchise will see yet another adventure of Ryo Saeba, who likes to chase after pretty girls and works as a private detective to protect the city of Tokyo from crime. As he is joined by the sister, Kaori, of his former partner, Hideyuki Makimura, more action and fun follows. While the synopsis of the movie hasn;t been revealed yet, it is safe to assume that the upcoming film will see the upcoming duo engaging in another suspense and war. 

Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kōjō (September 15)

One of the most ambitious projects by MAPPA other than their anime series, Alice to Therese no Maboroshi will be set in a dystopian world. As per MyAnimeList, the synopsis of the film reads:

“Masamune, a third-year middle school student, lives in a town where all the exits have been sealed off due to a sudden explosion at a steel mill, causing time to stand still. Residents are forbidden from making any changes and spend their suffocating days in the hopes of returning to normalcy someday. One day, Masamune’s mysterious classmate Mutsumi guides him to the fifth furnace of the steel mill, where they encounter a girl who cannot speak and resembles a wild wolf. The meeting between the two girls and Masamune disrupts the balance of the world, and the unstoppable “impulse of love” from boys and girls tired of their daily lives begins to destroy the world.”

Precure All Stars F (September 15)

Toei Animation’s Precure All Stars F is the 14th crossover film in the Pretty Cure All Stars franchise. The movie is being released as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the franchise. While Precure All Stars F will follow a theatrical release, it has yet to announce any information on the synopsis, cast, etc.
