Crunchyroll will stream BARTENDER Glass of God on its platform
Written by Araki Joh and illustrated by Kenji Nagatomo, the upcoming TV anime adaptation of Bartender will be part of the Spring 2024 anime line-up. The official website of Bartender announced the news through a teaser visual featuring part of Sasakura’s smirking face as he seems to have poured a drink into a glass and is pushing the cocktail towards his customer, which is presumed to be the viewers.
The anime will be available to simultaneously stream for international viewers on Crunchyroll as it airs on Japanese syndicates. As of now, only viewers from North and South America, Central America, Africa, CIS, Europe, and Oceania are confirmed to stream the series on the streaming platform.
BARTENDER Glass of God is already under development, with Ryoichi Kuraya serving as the director of the series at Liber INC. Aside from Kuraya, Mariko Kunisawa will be joining in as the series’ composer. The character designs will be handled by Yoichi Ueda, who has previously worked on Gangsta. Popular Japanese liquor brand Suntory Holdings Limited will also be credited on the making of the anime project in the role of Production Cooperation, extending their knowledge, supervising the alcohol in the series, and supporting the collaborations.
Kuraya, who is known for having directed Farming Life in Another World, shared his aspiration to provide the best results to the viewers with the anime.
“This is a drama of a bartender and his customers on the other side of the bar’s door, separated from the hustle and bustle of the city. I will do my best to create anime that inspires you to go to the bar and grab a drink.”
Character designer and Chief Animation Director Yoichi Ueda shared how he was unaware of the original manga, but upon being invited on the project, he recalled the kind of bar and the ambience he liked. This prompted him to move forward with the project. Additionally, sharing the character design of protagonist Ryuu Sasakura, he said:
“I designed Ryu Sasakura to be modern, simple, without too much shadow. With that said, I tried to keep the image of the original, incorporating his facial expressions from the manga. Please look forward to the new Sasakura in motion!”
Apart from them, Mariko Kunisawa also pitched in and shared how the taste of cocktails can vary depending on the person making it. Praising the bartender’s skills, the series composer mentioned how Araki Joh’s manga is “a story of a bartender and his customers that reminds you of a great cocktail, sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, with a clean aftertaste.” Kunisawa further added:
“Grownups can enjoy this anime as well, so please watch it with a favorite drink in your hand.”
As for the synopsis of the series, MyAnimeList describes Masaki Watanabe-directed Bartender (2006) anime as follows:
“Hidden in the backstreets of the Ginza district is Eden Hall, a lone bar operated by Ryuu Sasakura, the prodigy bartender who is said to mix the most incredible cocktails anyone has ever tasted. However, not just anyone can find Eden Hall; rather, it is Eden Hall that must find you. Customers of varying backgrounds, each plagued with their own troubles, wander into this bar. Nevertheless, Ryuu always knows the ideal cocktail to console and guide each distraught soul.”
BARTENDER Glass of God will also follow the same premise, seeing characters like Ryuu Sasakura, Miwa Kurushima, Keiko Gotou, Minoru Higashiysma, Masahiro Oda, Aki, among others.
