PS Plus Extra has, over the years, steadily added a strong set of several well-received and popular games to its catalogue across genres. The extensive catalogue means, however, that some of the gems may simply get missed out when browsing. We have handpicked for you 30 games on PS Plus Extra – from roguelikes to intense FPS experiences to sprawling open worlds where you can get lost for hours.
30. Detroit Human

Year | 2018 |
Developer | Quantic Dream |
Publisher | Sony |
Detroit: Become Human tells the story of Kara, Connor, and Markus, or rather, allows you to tell the story of these characters the way you see fit. Depending on your actions and decisions, and their consequences, the game throws up a staggering 85 possible endings: 13 for Connor, 33 for Markus, and 39 for Kara!
The game was received well, and ranks as one of Quantic Dream’s biggest hits. This racked up a business of 11 million units by Dec end last year.
29. Like A Dragon: Ishin!

Year | 2023 |
Developer | Ryu Ga Gotoku |
Publisher | Ryu Ga Gotoku |
While the original game was released in Japan back in 2014, Ryu Ga Gotoku remastered it and put out Like A Dragon: Ishin! for the western audiences in 2023. The game lets you live your samurai fantasy (and is one of our favorite sword-fighting games of all time); and is surprisingly rooted in realism with real-life characters.
The protagonist Sakamoto Ryoma lives during the tumultuous Bakumatsu in the Edo period of Japanese history. This one has all the classic Ryu Ga Gotoku trademarks – wacky sidequests, great storytelling filled with twists and turns, & karaoke!
28. Cult of the Lamb

Year | 2022 |
Developer | Massive Monster |
Publisher | Devolver Digital |
In Cult of the Lamb, you play as, well, the Lamb who gets resurrected by a mysterious deity, ‘ The One Who Waits’, and gets tasked with defeating the four Bishops. And with this central theme, Devolver Digital masterfully combines roguelikes and base building, with cute creatures at the centre of it all.
The developers further kept the interest sustained in the game with continuous free updates that added modes, campaigns, weapons, and other items. The game currently sits at Generally Favorable status on Metacritic and is easily one of the best games that you can play on PS Plus Extra right now.
27. Lost Judgment

Year | 2021 |
Developer | Ryu Ga Gotoku |
Publisher | Ryu Ga Gotoku |
Lost Judgment is another strong entry into this list of best games on PS Plus Extra by Ryu Ga Gotoku. Set in Kamurocho and Ijincho but featuring a different protagonist from Kazuma Kiryu, this one has you playing as detective Takayuki Yagami in the sequel to the original Judgment that came out a couple of years earlier in 2018.
Featuring fun combat systems, a likeable cast of characters, and an engaging storyline that deals with complex topics with nuance and maturity. Lost Judgment is a solid addition both to this list as well as Ryu Ga Gotoku’s formidable game portfolio.
26. DMC 5

Year | 2019 |
Developer | CAPCOM |
Publisher | CAPCOM |
DMC 5 has you hacking and slashing through enemies, demon hordes and challenging bosses using a variety of difficult to pull off but super satisfying when they land combos, either as Dante, Nero, or V.
Dante & Nero who were playable in earlier instalments return with added movesets and Devil Arms; while V is a new character who can summon Demon familiars to assist him in battle. The game was deservedly a big hit for CAPCOM and went on to score 9.9 million units sold by December 2024.
25. Shadow of the Colossus

Year | 2018 |
Developer | Sony |
Publisher | Sony |
A remake done ground up of a PS2 classic, the 2018 version of the original 2005 game has you in a simple but addictive gameplay loop of finding weak points as you frantically make your way up huge colossi – towering creatures that are part organic and part made up of rocks and earth. The original was inspired by, among many things, the monster movie genre, in particular, the 1954 movie Godzilla, and was then seen as an instant classic when it first came out.
The revamped controls, and the significantly updated graphics and visuals make the 2018 version of Shadow of the Colossus a must-play. The core gameplay nicely backed up by a surprisingly moving main story and a well-developed protagonist.
24. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Year | 2021 |
Developer | Eidos-Montreal |
Publisher | Square Enix |
The relatively short run-time of 10-12 hours that it takes to complete the game should not stop you from giving this game a look. It is easily one of the best superhero games of all time, and it plays exactly how you would imagine a Guardians of the Galaxy video game would be: it keeps all the core elements and the vibes of the movie intact, and at the same time delivers a pretty well-crafted story and combat.
This went under the radar for a lot of gamers at the time of launch, but has found a fan audience over a period of time. It was a welcome departure from the micro-transactions and multi-player focused Marvel Avengers from Square Enix, and went on to win several awards, including the ‘Adventure Game of the Year’ at the D.I.C.E Awards.
23. DOOM Eternal

Year | 2020 |
Developer | id Software |
Publisher | Bethesda Softworks |
We have ranked the sequel over the equally deserving 2016 reboot of the classic DOOM by id Software & Bethesda. DOOM Eternal was a gorier, more tactical-focused that pushed you to use the arena area intelligently, with combat that rewarded aggression, armed with weapons and an arsenal that allowed you to unleash incredibly satisfying glory kills.
After finishing the intense single-player campaign, the availability of modes like Battlemode, horde mode, and DLCs means that there is tremendous value to end-game content as well. While all fans have their favorites, credit is due to Bethesda for constantly innovating the gameplay between the various DOOM games, including the 2025 prequel, Doom: The Dark Ages.
22. Wolfenstein: The New Order

Year | 2014 |
Developer | MachineGames |
Publisher | Bethesda Softworks |
Another reimagining of an old generation behemoth of a game, Bethesda cracked this one as well, with the developer MachineGames getting the essence of the classic just right, and adding all the modern bells and whistles to deliver a tough but satisfying campaign, killing Nazis in an alternate-history 1960s Europe, as William B.J. Blazkowicz.
While the success of this game led to The Old Blood, Wolfenstein II, and the (poorly received) Wolfenstein: Youngblood. The first entry in the series reboot still stands up as one of the best FPS shooters around, even 11 years after release.
21. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Year | 2018 |
Developer | Eidos-Montreal |
Publisher | Square Enix |
There is something to be said for the charm and influence that old classics still have, for the next entry in the list of best games to play on PS Plus Extra is a re-imagining of a fan favorite and one of the most recognizable characters in video game history: Lara Croft in Tomb Raider.
The final part of the Survivor trilogy (incidentally, one of the best video game trilogies out there) capped the story quite nicely. The better graphics make us pick this game from the trilogy to put up in this list.
20. Far Cry 3: Classic Edition

Year | 2018 |
Developer | Ubisoft |
Publisher | Ubisoft |
Before Far Cry became templatized under the standard Ubisoft open-world design, the series gave us Far Cry 3. This had one of the most memorable villains in video game history in Vaas Montenegro and a great open world in Rook Island.
While the original Far Cry 3 came out in 2012, the Classic Edition was launched with upgraded graphics and all DLCs in 2018. It’s still worth purchasing if you haven’t gotten it yet.
19. Death Stranding

Year | 2019 |
Developer | Kojima Productions |
Publisher | Sony |
6 years since launch, it is still difficult to believe how a game about delivering packages, trudging the landscape while trying to keep balance all the time would somehow end up as one of the most unique and best games that one can find on PS Plus Extra to play right now. A heady mix of Kojima’s vision, actors putting in some amazing performances, some unique world-building and a convoluted story all came together to deliver an experience that resonated with gamers/
This is especially true, when, being boarded up in one’s homes with no travel or communication with others was a reality that cut too close during the subsequent years of the game coming out. The game came out at the perfect time.
18. Hogwarts Legacy

Year | 2023 |
Developer | Avalanche Entertainment |
Publisher | Warner Bros |
A game that really managed to give us the opportunity to experience Hogwarts in our own way. Right from the character creation to attending a variety of classes on the now familiar subjects, to some insane spell combos that made you feel like a real kick-ass wizard (or witch), this one is an easy recommendation.
While the story admittedly could have been a bit better, the fact that combat in the game was so tight and responsive made the experience that much more fun. The entire package is good enough to make it a must-play for fans and newcomers alike.
17. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Year | 2020 |
Developer | Insomniac Games |
Publisher | Sony |
In between the big two, Marvel’s Spider-Man 1 & Spider-Man 2, Sony came out with a little gem of a game as the launch title for PS5. Based on the character that became popular thanks to the animated movie Into the Spider-Verse, the game managed to make the protagonist stand apart with a distinct feel, both in terms of traversing and combat (which then got leveraged superbly in Spider-Man 2).
It also helped that the game is set during Christmas, making the city look even more different and festive as compared to what we had seen before. The game went on to sell a neat 14.4 million units for Insomniac by June 23, and with a Metacritic rating of Generally Favorable and a score of 85, this is one of the rare games that has been embraced by fans and critics alike!
16. Returnal

Year | 2021 |
Developer | Housemarque |
Publisher | Sony |
A genre-bending game combining the best of roguelikes, third-person shooters, and bullet hell, tough and unforgiving combat, all backed by an intriguing storyline spanning sci-fi and horror, and one of the best uses of the PS5 Dual Sense Controller, Returnal forms an excellent debut for developer Housemarque. Again, one of those games that went slightly below the radar for a lot of gamers, its inclusion in PS Plus Extra gives that opportunity to experience what was actually one of the best games to have come out in 2021.
15. PREY

Year | 2017 |
Developer | Arkane Studios |
Publisher | Bethesda Softworks |
With the less-than-impressive Deathloop and the disaster that was Redfall, it is difficult to imagine that at a point in time, Arkane Studios developed Dishonored, Prey & Dishonored 2 back to back. Prey, like Returnal above, combines a variety of genres ranging from FPS to stealth to RPG and Metroidvanias (and rogue-like with its excellent Mooncrash DLC) to deliver a tight, tense and fulfilling gaming experience that few other games are able to deliver.
While the game was well-received, it is only in recent years that the game has started receiving attention and recognition for being one of the very best games. It is a much-deserved entry into the list of the best games to play on PS Plus Extra right now.
14. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Year | 2013 |
Developer | Ubisoft |
Publisher | Ubisoft |
The Assassin’s Creed games (PC & console) universe now covers 14 games with the recent addition of Shadows, and despite 8 releases succeeding it, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag still tops the list of best Assassin’s Creed games. The game took a refreshing break from the increasingly convoluted Templars vs Assassins lore of the game universe and gave the players the freedom to sail the high seas, living the life of a pirate, and gamers lapped it up.
Black Flag featured surprisingly intuitive and fun combat when boarding enemy ships for loot, destroying beachside forts, completing naval contracts, and upgrading the Jackdaw to make it a beast of a ship. Little surprise that gamers are already looking forward to a possible remake of the game.
13. Disco Elysium: The Extended Cut

Year | 2019 |
Developer | ZA/UM |
Publisher | ZA/UM |
One of the more unique games on this list, Disco Elysium is a detective role-playing game, where you take on the role that is the darling of neo-noir TV detective dramas: a detective struggling with amnesia stumbles upon a murder case that goes much deeper as the game progresses. Two things that set the game apart from others is the unique oil-painting visual style and aesthetics of the game, and the absence of any type of combat.
What you have, instead, are skill checks across attributes and traits, and how you progress through the story depends in a big way on your playstyle and the attributes that you have invested points into. The world-building for the game is fantastic, and includes some six thousand years of history developed by the small indie team behind the project.
The game regularly makes it to the list of the best RPGs and games of all time. Its availability on PS Plus Extra is a great incentive for you to give this game a shot if this one slipped under your radar.
12. Cyberpunk 2077

Year | 2020 |
Developer | CD Projekt Red |
Publisher | CD Projekt Red |
By now, the redemption arc of Cyberpunk 2077 from the disaster at launch to a modern classic is well-known and celebrated. While the PS Plus Extra does not include the excellent Phantom Liberty DLC, the base game itself will have you put in 60+ hours.
The game can give you more content if you want to see the multiple endings and explore Night City – one of the best open worlds that you are likely to come across in any video game. If this is a world that, for some reason, you have not dived into, its inclusion in the PS Plus Extra catalog of games is reason enough to make amends right away!
11. Control: Ultimate Edition
Year | 2019 |
Developer | Remedy Entertainment |
Publisher | 505 Games |
Control made quite a splash during its launch, especially for its non-linear level design, tough but responsive and satisfying gunplay, top-notch Brutalist architecture design, a likeable protagonist, and a weird but involving storyline (it helps that the developers are a master at nailing this with their previous work in Alan Wake, Quantum Break & Max Payne).
As a bonus, the game has one of the best levels that you are likely to come across, in the Ashtray Maze. As the entire structure around you dissolves, collapses, and shifts as you shoot enemies, all set to a kickass background score.
10. Dishonored 2

Year | 2016 |
Developer | Arkane Studios |
Publisher | Bethesda |
Dishonored 2 has Arkane Studios at the very top of their game, taking the original Dishonored almost as a prototype, and delivering a bigger, much improved, and fleshed out final product to deliver one of the best stealth-oriented games of all time. Special mention also of The Clockwork Mansion level, which has to be one of the most ingenious and intricately carved out level designs in a video game, right up there with The Ashtray Maze in Control that we talked about above.
9. It Takes Two

Year | 2021 |
Developer | Hazelight Studios |
Publisher | EA |
It Takes Two is one of those rare games that do co-op superbly well. Developers Hazelight Studios tried their hands at this genre before this in the underrated A Way Out. However, this was the game where they got all elements just right (and would eventually go on to produce their masterpiece in this genre in their next game, Split Fiction).
8. Fallout 4

Year | 2015 |
Developer | Bethesda |
Publisher | Bethesda |
One of the two legendary open-world entries (more on the second one in a bit) in already established and loved franchises from Bethesda, Fallout 4 gives a post-apocalyptic sandbox for players to explore for hours – collecting that last bit of scrap to craft a legendary weapon, or completing the questlines for various factions, or simply taking out Raiders & Ghouls. It may not be the best entry in the series (that honor is reserved by fans for Fallout: New Vegas), but it is the most polished and expansive one of the Fallout franchise for sure, and a must-play for any RPG fan.
7. Ghost of Tsushima

Year | 2020 |
Developer | Sucker Punch |
Publisher | Sony Interactive |
The Ghost of Tsushima, on its release, was an instant classic. It combined some breathtaking visuals, intuitive game design, and gave the player all the tools to take apart enemies either as a katana-wielding samurai or a master of tools ninja.
While the game could have done with a more responsive open world and a more nuanced protagonist, these were minor issues compared to what Sucker Punch was able to deliver on all other aspects. The game became popular and successful enough to have a sequel on the way in Ghost of Yotei, as well as a movie in the works.
6. Skyrim

Year | 2011 |
Developer | Bethesda |
Publisher | Bethesda |
The second of the two legendary RPG franchises, each new game in the Elder Scrolls series has been nothing short of a benchmark for others to try to replicate, and enjoy popularity even years and years after the original. This was confirmed in the recent launch of Oblivion Remastered.
Skyrim, launched first in 2011, has had multiple re-releases, but the one that we recommend as the definitive Skyrim edition is the Skyrim Special Edition. This includes updated visuals, as well as all the DLCs – Dawnguard, Hearthfire & Dragonborn.
5. Demon’s Souls

Year | 2020 |
Developer | Bluepoint Games |
Publisher | Sony Interactive |
Demon’s Souls is a remake of the original game launched back in 2009 for PS3, and served as a launch title for PS5 along with the other game on this list that we talked about, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Bluepoint Games has made a name for itself on successfully remastering and remaking games, keeping, well, the soul of the original games intact.
Bluepoint Games were the ones behind Shadow of the Colossus remaster and the God of War Greek trilogy remaster. The Demon’s Souls Remake is the best version of the game, and the updated graphics do full justice to the tough-as-nails combat, punishing level design and enemy placements, intimidating bosses, and an overall feeling of dread as you desperately make your way to the next Archstone.
4. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Year | 2016 |
Developer | Naughty Dog |
Publisher | Sony Interactive |
Uncharted 4 plays like a love letter to the series from Naughty Dog. The game takes the best of all that the Uncharted series has become known for, and delivers each of these elements in a polished manner.
It was almost playing like a best-of hits of the series, wrapping it all up in a touching and moving story. It boasts of some thrilling set pieces, platforming, and puzzle-solving with characters that are superbly fleshed out and brought to life by a top-notch cast. The game deservedly went on to win several Game of the Year awards, bringing commercial success as well to Naughty Dog with 18 million copies sold, and is often counted among the best video games ever made.
3. God of War

Year | 2018 |
Developer | Santa Monica Studio |
Publisher | Sony Interactive |
The first game in the reboot of the old God of War trilogy transported Kratos from the Greek world to Norse mythology, and centered the game around not just him but Kratos and his son, Atreus. The world was also greatly expanded, to make it open zone if not open world. In this game, we come across a more subdued Kratos (well, most of the time), but that does not stop him from wielding his new Leviathan Axe to devastating effect.
The story was also a touching one, with a fully fleshed-out antagonist, and the game sits at a Universal Acclaim status with a score of 94 on Metacritic. The game went on to sell a staggering 23 million copies by November 2022.
2. Bloodborne

Year | 2015 |
Developer | FromSoftware |
Publisher | Sony |
Bloodborne took the souls formula, sped up the entire pace and frantic nature of combat, and then transposed all of that onto a Lovecraftian world full of eldritch horrors and monstrosities. The result was one of the best games ever, and whose remake has been the subject of endless speculation across its legion of fans, who still today, host an annual return to Yharnam event.
FromSoft captured lightning in a bottle with this, and while there have been several Souls-likes, there is just one game that has somewhat managed to emulate the combat and gameplay mechanics of Bloodborne. That’s a legacy to be admired.
1. The Last Of Us Remastered

Year | 2014 |
Developer | Naughty Dog |
Publisher | Sony |
You know you are in for something special when the first 15 minutes of the game sucker punches you emotionally the way the prologue for The Last Of Us did. The experience of playing through the story of Ellie and Joel, till the finale that still gets talked about today, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a shining example of what stories told through the medium of video games can deliver.
Originally designed for PS3, the PS4 remastered version was released in 2014, the PS5 version in 2022 and the PC version in 2023. The game is cited as one of the best games of the seventh generation of consoles, and is easily the best game available to play on PS Plus Extra right now.
