The game release calendar of 2024 has a great mix of big-ticket AAA games and some promising indie indie titles. There are sequels and potentially new franchises in the pipeline, covering genres from RPG to rogue-likes to strategy.
Which are the ones that you should especially be keeping an eye out for? We have the answer for you in our list of the most anticipated games of 2024.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
Release Date | May 21, 2024 |
Developer | Ninja Theory |
Platforms | PC, Xbox Series S/X |
The original Senua’s Saga was everything that a good video game needs to be, but it flew under the radar for a lot of gamers and retained a niche appeal. A lot has changed since, with the game getting the recognition it deserves. Hopes are high across the gaming community (and Microsoft!) that the sequel will build upon the strengths of the original.
The developers seem to have taken Senua’s psychosis and unique worldview to heart and have consulted psychiatrists to get this part of the narrative spot on. This kind of an involvement and commitment from devs is always heartening. The gameplay reveal during the Xbox Developer Direct earlier this year showcased the surreal environments and haunting imagery that the game is known for.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 looks to be shaping up perfectly and is easily one of the most anticipated games of 2024.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape
Release Date | June 4, 2024 |
Developer | Bungie |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5 , Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Destiny 2: The Final Shape is the eighth and final expansion. While the story will keep moving ahead through Episodes, this expansion will have the Guardians taking on the Witness – the major villain – to prevent him from, well, taking on The Final Shape. It also marks the end of the “Light and Darkness Saga”.
Like in all major expansions, players will have access to new sub-classes, maps, gear, weapons and so on. The release date for The Final Shape is June 4, 2024. And while there are well-documented problems with Bungie, including layoffs and employee motivation, that does not take away from the potential that this expansion holds.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
Release Date | June 20, 2024 |
Developer | FromSoftware Inc |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
The launch of the eagerly awaited DLC promises to be nothing short of a major event. The announcement of the release date earlier this year itself triggered a huge number of players back into the base game. The hype launched a flurry of videos explaining the backstory, lore, and possible bosses and secrets that the Tarnished will likely encounter in the DLC.
As for me, consider me primed and ready with my Eleonora’s Poleblade bleed build (and a Cold Claymore Strength based build as backup) for braving all the challenges in The Lands Between once again, come June 21.
Hades 2
Release Date | Q2 2024 (Early Access) |
Developer | SuperGiant Games |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
Hades released in 2020 as a rogue-like action RPG with brutal combat in isometric camera view. It was an instant hit which went on to collect several awards and currently features a 93% score on Metacritic. So, it’s no surprise that a sequel was announced during the 2022 Game Awards, and the game is now readying for an early access in Q2. The original game was in early access for nearly 2 years before its launch, so there’s that.
Hades 2 will feature Melinoe, the Princess of the Underworld and sister of the first game’s protagonist. The developers have promised new locations, challenges, and upgrade systems. As a fan of the first game and the overall genre in general, this is one game that is for sure going to be on my list of must-play games in 2024. Hopefully with the solid mechanics of the first game backing it up, the sequel will adhere to the ‘bigger and better’ principle!
GreedFall 2: The Dying World
Release Date | Q2 2024 (Early Access) |
Developer | Spiders |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X |
The first GreedFall was a AA game made by Spiders with AAA aspirations. While it had its shortcomings and could have especially done with less tedious travelling and backtracking, the game also had its moments. It’s got an engaging storyline, nicely fleshed out support characters, and decisions to be made with real and impactful consequences.
Hopefully, GreedFall 2 will improve upon the weak points to bring a more refined and polished story-telling and RPG experience.
Frostpunk 2
Release Date | July 25, 2024 |
Developer | 11 Bit Studios |
Platforms | PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X |
Frostpunk released in 2018 and proved to be one of the best city building games out there. It combined survival and strategy presented with some great graphics and fantastic world-building. You played as the leader of a lone city battling the elements of nature.
While the game had all that you would expect from a good strategy title, it introduced nuances like law-making through Book of Laws and personal quests where you always had to make difficult choices. It drove home the responsibilities of being a leader in a way few games do.
With all the solid mechanics to back the game, Frostpunk 2 is easily one of the most anticipated game releases for 2024. The game was first revealed back in August 2021 and now has a confirmed release date of July 25, 2024 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
Black Myth: Wu Kong
Release Date | August 20, 2024 |
Developer | Game Science |
Platforms | PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X |
Black Myth: Wu Kong made a strong impression from the very first trailer and gameplay video 3 years back, and all subsequent videos have only added to the hype. The game looks brutally challenging, the bosses and creatures look suitably intimidating, the weapons and special moves look all flashy and impactful.
All in all, this could very well end up being THE souls-like game of the year and a strong contender for top 2024 games lists. For now though, we will keep this on the list of most anticipated 2024 games list till its release on August 20 this year.
Star Wars Outlaws
Release Date | August 27, 2024 |
Developer | Ubisoft, Massive Entertainment |
Platforms | PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X |
The game brings two behemoths who have enjoyed immense success but have had a rough run recently: The Star Wars Universe – where all the recent TV series except for early seasons of The Mandalorian and Andor have not met with much success – and Ubisoft – where the standard open world tropes are becoming too apparent and that much more tiresome in every iteration of Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
Hopefully, Star Wars Outlaws, which releases on August 27 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X will be a different and better outcome for both. The game setting is an interesting one in between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and the overall universe is a great place for an open world setting.
The recently launched story trailer and gameplay reveal have been received cautiously by the gaming community, but Ubisoft has been known to surprise pleasantly. You only need to look at The Prince of Persia reboot to know this, and the game does look to provide different worlds to travel to. It seems to have some space combat, different approaches to fights, and an intriguing story line. Hopefully, it will all come together to deliver enough bang for the 70$ price tag.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl
Release Date | September 5, 2024 |
Developer | GSC Game World |
Platforms | PC, Xbox Series S/X |
The first S.T.A.L.K.E.R game was released 17 years back and was received well as a great mix of horror/survival and FPS – with all of that set in an alternate version of Chernobyl. This was followed by two releases in this series over the next two years in 2008 and 2009, and a full scale sequel was actually announced first way back in 2010.
Since then, the game has gone through multiple delays and cancellations, with a (hopefully) final release date on 5th September. The gameplay reveal so far looks to promise more of the same intense combat and open world setting with strange happenings all around, and I think that is not a bad thing at all.
Avowed
Release Date | Q3/Q4 2024 |
Developer | Obsidian Entertainment |
Platforms | PC, Xbox Series S/X |
The wait for the definitive game that finally gives the current gen Microsoft console a differentiator and reason to buy over PlayStation will hopefully come to an end with Avowed. Especially after the hype around Starfield did not nearly translate into commercial success as hoped for, and let’s not even talk about Redfall.
Avowed has a lot going for it. The world-building is already set to be rich since it is based on the same universe as Pillars of Eternity. It has got a good team working on the project in Obsidian Entertainment – the same studio that worked on Outer Worlds. The initial dev talk is also pointing in the right direction: A more focused storyline set in a more compact and hand-crafted world.
The game is expected to release either in Q3 or Q4. The developers came up with a detailed game overview covering combat, builds, and setting in an Xbox Dev Direct earlier this year.
Indiana Jones & The Great Circle
Release Date | 2024 |
Developer | MachineGames |
Platforms | PC, Xbox Series S/X |
2024 is shaping up to be a promising year for Microsoft Xbox, with big-ticket exclusives lined up for launch, and Indiana Jones for sure forms part of the list.
The game is set between the Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade and has Todd Howard as the Executive Producer. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be a mix of first person and third person, depending upon the gameplay. In addition to the might of Bethesda studio as the publisher, the game is developed by MachineGames, who have the Wolfenstein series on their resume.
The game also has an intriguing McGuffin as Indy works to prevent a group from usurping a power that is supposedly connected to all places, forming a perfect circle around the world. After the first announcement more than 3 years back, the game is confirmed for a release in 2024, though we are still waiting for more details on the date and month.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Release Date | 2024? |
Developer | Team Cherry |
Platforms | PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Switch |
The game was first announced back in 2019 following the runaway success of the original Metroidvania-inspired Hollow Knight in 2017 by Team Cherry, a small team of passionate developers. Since then, gameplay reveals and more trailers promise the same brutal but rewarding combat and some great world-building.
Disappointingly, there’s no confirmed release date so far. We only hope that the game will see the light of the day in 2024 – we are already 5 years and counting since the first reveal.
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando
Release Date | 2024 |
Developer | Saber Interactive |
Platforms | PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X |
The FPS co-op game was first announced in Jun 2023 with developers Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment. It’s touted to be carnage-filled and full of intense chaotic combat with guns, vehicles, turrets – all to the tune of 80s rock. Outside of the announcement trailer (and a sign-up form for a closed beta), not much is known about the game, although the release date is confirmed as 2024.
And that brings us to the end of the list of most anticipated games of 2024. Which ones among these are you most excited about?
