A hero such as the Arisen can’t help but attract attention. That’s precisely what happens early in the campaign, after you begin completing tasks for Captain Brant. People start talking, and your heroic triumphs don’t please everyone. Eventually, you will activate The Arisen’s Shadow, a quest that introduces you to a spy.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 – How to Activate and Clear The Arisen’s Shadow
The world in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a hostile one. It takes time to fall into a comfortable routine. Captain Brant helps with that acclimation, once you encounter him in the capital city of Vernworth. He offers some tasks, which you can complete in the order that suits you. Once you start completing tasks for Captain Brant, The Arisen’s Shadow quest activates automatically.
In my case, The Arisen’s Shadow activated after I finished the Monster Culling quest, which I had accepted first out of the options presented. That’s a fairly lengthy quest, requiring you to visit multiple locations around the capital city to slay monsters. You might prefer to select a shorter one instead.

After I reported my success, I left the Stardrop Inn where I had met with Captain Brant. Almost immediately, a notice appeared on-screen to present a new quest. It told me to look out for “the mysterious figure who has been shadowing your every step.”
When you first activate The Arisen’s Shadow, your shadowy assailant may not necessarily be in the vicinity. I actually left the city to tend to a few other matters. Then I returned to Vernworth. You must be in the city of Vernworth to encounter your shadow.
You might also see your shadow without realizing it. He dresses in very drab clothes. By daylight, he blends in pretty well with the heavy foot traffic. You can find your shadow in the streets at night most easily. When you get near him, he will likely shout, “You…!” and try to run. That’s how you know you found the right guy. You can run after him for as long as it takes, as long as you don’t lose sight of him for long. Your stamina works differently in town. Pursue him until you corner him. Then grab him once he is within range. Wrestle him to the ground and you can interrogate him.
Your shadow’s name is Bermudo. He doesn’t have much to say. After a brief conversation, you can refuse to let him go, or ask for compensation. When he offers compensation, your best bet is to accept his money to receive 5000 G. Doing so ends the quest.
