The Gryphon Combat Sparrow is one of the main rewards from Destiny 2’s new limited-time event, Heavy Metal, which just kicked off. To get your hands on this vehicle, you’ll need to complete challenges during the Heavy Metal event and reach Rank 15. The event itself features PvP action between teams piloting Brigs and Drake tanks, so expect plenty of chaos and explosions.
How to Acquire the Gryphon Sparrow
When you first jump in, head over to the Tower and talk to Shaxx. He’ll give you a short intro mission for the Heavy Metal event and unlock access to your new Event Home—an event tracking system that replaces the old Event Cards.

Once you complete the intro, go to the Quests tab and click on Event Home. This is where you’ll track all your Heavy Metal progress, view challenges, and claim rewards. Hitting Rank 15 here is what unlocks the Gryphon. The event only runs for one week, but if you’re short on time (or patience), there’s a shortcut: you can purchase event ranks for 100 Silver each. So, with 1500 Silver, you could instantly grab the Gryphon without grinding.

The Gryphon isn’t just a flashy new ride—it’s also armed. It comes equipped with a shotgun that deals solid close-range damage, perfect for clearing out red-bar enemies. It also features lock-on missile pods that cause damage over time when hitting groups of foes. While it’s not going to shake up the game’s meta, it’s a fun and useful reward for participating in the event.
How to Play the Heavy Metal Event

In Heavy Metal, the goal’s pretty simple: blow stuff up and grab what drops. Every time you take out an enemy vehicle, your team gets a point. But if you run over and snag the Coin they drop, that’s another point right there. So, it’s not just about kills—you’ve got to actually collect them too. Those Coins aren’t just for scoring, either. Picking them up gives you a quick health boost and refills your secondary weapon ammo, which can keep you alive in the chaos.

There’s also a twist: the top player in the match is marked. You’ll see them glowing, and they’re a bit slipperier thanks to a boosted Dodge. But if your team manages to bring them down and grab their special Gold Coin, you get two points instead of one. The match keeps going until one team hits 50 points. So if you’re smart about who you’re chasing and make sure to scoop up every Coin, you’ll rack up points fast and probably walk away with the win.
