How to Tune Tier 5 Armor with Stat-Swapping Mods in Destiny 2

The Edge of Fate expansion introduces the most complex armor offered by Bungie to us ever, the Tier 5 armor. It’s undeniably powerful, but also a bit confusing if you’re not clear on how the stat system actually works. Nevertheless, it is definitely the best time to learn how tuning works in case you plan to optimize your builds to play in PvE or PvP.

What Is Tier 5 Armor?

Tier 5 gear only comes from top-tier endgame content like Grandmaster Nightfalls and raids. Every piece drops with fixed stat values:

  • 30 in one “Primary” stat
  • 25 in a “Secondary”
  • 20 in a random “Tertiary”
  • Also, each one has 11 mod energy and a Tuning Mod slot

Also, the piece will have one “tuned stat” which is randomly selected. This is the only stat you can adjust later using a Tuning Mod.

Armor Archetypes and Why They Matter

Every armor piece belongs to an archetype, and that decides its two highest stats. These are:

  • Gunner → Weapon / Grenade
  • Brawler → Melee / Health
  • Specialist → Class / Weapon
  • Paragon → Super / Melee
  • Grenadier → Grenade / Super
  • Bulwark → Health / Class

You can focus your Ghost mod to increase your chances of getting the archetype you need, which makes a huge difference if you’re farming a specific build.

How Tertiary Stats and Tuned Stats Work

After you get your archetype-determined stats, the tertiary stat is picked from whatever’s left. There are only four possible outcomes per archetype.

The “tuned stat” though, that’s a random one out of all six stats. So yeah, the chance of getting the exact combo you want is low, but not impossible.

Two Types of Tuning Mods

Tier 5 armor has a unique tuning mod system. There are two main types you’ll use:

  1. +5/−5 Mod – This gives you +5 to the tuned stat and –5 from another. It’s good when you’re min-maxing something like Discipline or Intellect.
  2. +1 Balanced Mod – Adds +1 to your three lowest stats. It’s subtle but effective in smoothing out uneven builds.

Combined with stat mods and masterworking, these allow for deep customization, even enabling triple-100 builds, which were previously impossible.

Masterworking and Stat Mods

Each level of Masterworking adds +1 to your three lowest stats, and fully Masterworked armor gives you +15 total.

You can also equip flat stat mods (+5 or +10) to push key stats over tier thresholds. They cost energy though, so manage that wisely.

All this lets you push up to three stats to the 100 cap, depending on the piece. Sometimes two, if you’re unlucky.

How Stats Work Now

Stats go from 0 to 200 now. Every single point matters, no dead zones. You mostly want to aim for 70–100 in major stats (like Recovery, Discipline), because those thresholds really help with cooldowns.

Getting to 200 though? Almost never happens with armor alone. You’d need help from things like Font mods or artifact bonuses.

Drop Rates and Farming Odds

If you don’t use a Ghost mod, the odds aren’t great:

  • Archetype match: 1 in 6
  • Tertiary stat: 1 in 4
  • Tuned stat match: 1 in 6
  • Overall perfect piece: 1 in 144

If you do use a focused Ghost, odds improve a lot, like down to ~1 in 48. So yes, I use a Ghost mod. Always.

Step-by-Step Tuning Guide

Here’s how to go about tuning your Tier 5 armor:

  1. Set your Ghost mod for the stat you’re building around
  2. Grind GM content or raids for Tier 5 drops
  3. Masterwork the armor fully (this gives you energy and bonus stats)
  4. Check the tuned stat and figure out what your build needs
  5. Choose the right tuning mod:
    • +5/–5 to spike a priority stat
    • +1 Balanced if your stats are kind of all over the place
  6. Add stat mods to polish off the totals
  7. Use DIM or Armor Picker to make sure you aren’t wasting stats

This new system really changed how armor builds work in Destiny. Tier 5 with tuning mods takes us away from just accepting whatever RNG throws our way. Instead, now we have the tools to shape builds our way.

If you’re serious about PvE, raids, or Trials, this isn’t just optional, it’s the core of modern buildcraft. And even if the grind is real, the control it offers is worth it.
