How To Get Mage Armor In Baldur’s Gate 3
Mage Armor in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a level 1 Abjuration Spell that can be learned by a Sorcerer and Wizard at Class level 1 and can also be learned by an Arcane Trickster Rogue and Eldritch Knight Fighter at Class level 3. You can also learn this on any of your characters by giving them Feats like the Magic Initiate: Wizard or the Magic Initiate: Sorcerer.
Other than actually learning the spell, you can also get a Scroll of Mage Armor that can be used by any character to cast Mage Armor. However, this is a one-time use and you will need another scroll if you want to cast it again.
There is also a unique version of this spell called the Armor of Shadows that can only be obtained by Warlocks that have Eldritch Invocation at Level 2+. This version of the Mage Armor can only be used by the Warlock on himself and will not expend any Spell Slots.
How To Effectively Use Mage Armor In Baldur’s Gate 3
To use Mage Armor in Baldur’s Gate 3, the character you want to cast this on cannot have any Armor equipped. Even if a character has a helmet or boots that give any kind of Armor, you will not be able to cast Mage Armor on that character.
This is because Mage Armor increases your Armor Class to 13 while also adding a Dexterity Modifier on top of it. It would be too powerful if it was allowed to be cast on a character that already has a decent Armor Class due to an equipped armor.

The best Classes that can use Baldur’s Gate 3 Mage Armor are the Sorcerer and Wizard as they don’t rely on equipped Armor. However, you can also make this work in other classes. As long as the armor class of a character is lower than 13 then this will buff it up to 13, making it incredibly useful.
As shown in the above image, Gale has a base Armor Class of 10, and Mage armor adds 3 to this and another 1 based on Gale’s Dexterity. It is also especially useful when using it to protect a friendly creature from its foes.
One of the most effective techniques to use the Mage Armor spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to cast it using a character you aren’t actually using. Since the spell lasts until Long-rest, you can use one of the characters at your camp to cast it on another character but then switch out the caster with a different character.
This way, you will have Mage Armor on a certain character while also having another character instead of a Sorceror or Wizard where they aren’t required. Remember that equipping any Armor on a character that has the Mage Armor spell cast on them will remove the Mage Armor immediately.
