Wuchang: Fallen Feathers doesn’t really let you off easy at the beginning. From the very start, it throws you into this strange world full of punishing enemies and even trickier mechanics.
If you focus on the right things early and avoid certain missteps, your experience becomes way smoother. Here’s what helped me, and what didn’t.
Get Combat Working Early

This game does not want you to be static, rolling around, or blocking too much. Keep moving and think about this:
- Skyborn Might’s Very Important
See those feather icons? That is your power meter. Dodging at the right time (Shimmer dodge) charges it. It takes practice but you need to do some, as much relies on it. - Weapons Help Build Might Too
Some weapons accelerate you to Might sooner. Such as with Longswords, a skill allows the second light attack to grant Might. One-hand swords slowly do it naturally. Don’t forget to examine those trees. - Heavy Attacks Are Super Duper Helpful
If you equip “Wind Force,” your heavy attack is quick. Poking from behind staggers enemies, and then you can hit them with Obliterate. This does work on bosses sometimes too. - Swift Draw Really Matters
Press L3 and you switch to the alternate weapon and perform a special attack. Combos become longer and more powerful doing it that way. - Learn Your Weapon’s Defense Style
Axes do block. Dual blades will do clash attacks if you level them up. Longswords can parry using “Sword Counter.” Not all weapons block in the same way.
Don’t Screw Up Your Skill Tree

Skill tree, named Impetus Repository, is more beneficial than it appears. Keep these in mind:
- Left Side is Extremely Important
You need 3 Skyborn Might stacks (you begin with 1). There are some moves that simply will not function without it. - Upgrade Mana Flask Early
Additional flask usage and improved healing can be achieved from two special nodes. You will need rare goods from golden chests, but still unlock the nodes early. - Respec Without Losing Anything
Shrines allow free respec and return materials. This way, experimenting with new weapons or builds is safe. - All Weapon Types Upgrade Together
If you level up Longswords to +3, all subsequent Longswords are +3 as well. It allows you to frequently switch weapons and remain powerful. - Level Up Based On Weapon Stats
Weapons indicate what stat provides largest bonus. Check the control multipliers. Apply Strength, Agility, Magic or Feathering as appropriate.

Madness Is Bad But Also. Not?

This system is problematic, but has some advantages as well. Consider the following when using these:
- What Madness Does
Less than 50%, you lose some mercury. 50–90%, you lose more. At 90%+, you lose all and can possibly spawn a demon clone. If you defeat it, you recover your stuff. - Madness Also Increases You
Increased madness = increased damage (and taken as well). Certain skills only function if your madness is high. It’s dangerous but offers greater rewards. - Use Your Demon to Battle
It battles all things, not only you. So you can cause it to battle enemies, then clean up afterwards. - Cleanse When It’s Too Much
In Shu Sanctum, there’s a woman by a statue. You can reset madness in there with a gift item. She offers one for free.

Exploration Gives Rewards

Even if not open world, exploration assists greatly. So make sure to consider the following:
- Use Compass Correctly
Red arrows = shrines that you missed. Yellow = NPCs around. - Chat with NPCs Whenever Possible
Some reward quests, others open up good equipment. Don’t overlook them. - Observation of Birds and Puzzle Statues
Birds provide buffs. Statues pay you back if you perform the right emote in front of them. - Discovery of Bamboo Creatures
They have drops of bamboo shoots. Exchange them with the panda NPC for awesome items.
Wuchang sort of isn’t that kind of game where you can just bullet in like a madman. It’s time-consuming, it’s trial and error, and is definitely a great deal frustrating at times. But learning its systems early is worth it big time. Stay on it, try things differently, and don’t worry about falling over a little.
