The ending of Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash has been subject to polarizing reactions from the audience and remains a hot topic of debate to date. While the protagonist’s artistic madness peaked in the last frame, it did leave moviegoers wondering if there would be a Whiplash sequel sometime in the future.
Will There Be Another Whiplash Movie?
Since the release of Whiplash in 2014, there hasn’t been any official announcement, rumor, or leak related to Whiplash 2. Given the well-rounded nature of the original script and Damien’s vision as a filmmaker, I don’t think we will ever get a Whiplash sequel.
Although, in an interview with ScreenCrush, director Damien Chazelle did brainstorm the probable trajectory of the story post the ending. When asked what would happen to Andrew and Fletcher after Whiplash ends, the filmmaker said,
“I think there’s a certain amount of damage that will always have been done. Fletcher will always think he won and Andrew will be a sad, empty shell of a person and will die in his 30s of a drug overdose. I have a very dark view of where it goes.”
The director also agreed that while the two warring individuals had a “moment” at the end, it was a fleeting thing, and that they would always hate each other.
In my opinion, Fletcher and Andrew’s unexpected collaboration in the climax was a fitting end to the struggling artist’s tale. Stretching the story beyond that could, in all probability, ruin the impact of the popular Whiplash ending.
So, while the thought of Whiplash 2 becoming a reality is momentarily exciting, it’s best to leave the masterpiece alone.
