After the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, one would expect Larian Studios to work on a DLC or a sequel for the superhit title. However, the developer has bigger plans.
In its latest community post on Steam, Larian reiterated that the team would not be working on Baldur’s Gate 4 or any major expansions for BG3. Instead, they will focus on developing their own IPs. The post read:
“As an independent studio since 1996, we value the freedom to follow our creativity wherever it leads. In this case, after six years in the Forgotten Realms and much discussion and rumination, we’ve decided to seize this opportunity to develop our own IPs.”
The developer added that it is working on two entirely new games. While the post did not reveal any further details about the project, Larian assured players that “the sensibilities that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive”.
Larian CEO Swen Vincke chimed in at the end of the post to claim that the two new projects would be their “best work ever”. He wrote,
“I get excited like a kid watching the key imagery, want to show it to everyone now and grumble in frustration at having to wait until it’s actually all working. Yes, it’s hype but it’s hype because it really looks and feels good.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 won the 2023 Game of the Year awards at BAFTA and The Game Awards, also sweeping away the trophies in several other categories. The game continues to rake in new players as the developer continues to improve the game with timely patches. As long as Larian continues to deliver with the same passion, I’m sure their new IPs are in safe hands.
