Rebel Wolves, a studio established by ex-CDPR developers, is developing an open-world dark fantasy RPG currently titled Dawnwalker: Origins, according to extensive research by Twitter user Kurakasis. The team of Rebel Wolves consists of devs who had crucial roles in the making of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
Kurakasis has collated morsels of information scattered across Rebel Wolves’ job listings, domain registrations, interviews, and more to paint a full picture of their upcoming game.
What Is Dawnwalker: Origins?
Dawnwalker: Origins is supposed to take place in a brand-new dark fantasy universe and Rebel Wolves co-founder Konrad Tomaszkiewicz aims to “revolutionize the RPG genre” with their debut title. In an interview with Polish video game outlet PolskiGamedev.pl, Tomaszkiewicz opened up about the game. Dawnwalker: Origins will fuse an open world with a strong story.
This does not come as a surprise since it’s ex-CDPR devs we are talking about. However, Rebel Wolves is a medium-sized studio with 80-100 people working in it. This comes up when Tomaszkiewicz talks about the scope of Dawnwalker: Origins given the huge development resources needed for an AAA open-world RPG.
“The scope of this game will not be as gigantic as The Witcher, but the amount of quests will be I think greater than it was in The Witcher,” he states, adding that the game’s runtime will be akin to the Blood and Wine expansion.
As for Dawnwalker: Origins’ current development stage, Kurakasis notes:
- The game is now entering the alpha stage.
- The work-in-progress image is from pre-alpha.
- Nearly 100 people worked on the game three months ago.
- In 2022, NetEase became a shareholder in Rebel Wolves, but the studio ‘remains creatively independent.’
- There are no microtransactions.
Dawnwalker: Origins is reportedly planned to be released on PC and next-gen consoles (which most likely means PS5 and Xbox Series X|S). There is no release window mentioned yet, but if I had to take a guess, 2025 seems like a good bet.
