James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne, has succumbed to cancer at the age of 65. McCaffrey also voiced Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2 and Zachariah Trench in Control.
TMZ was the first to report this unfortunate news that came from the star’s representative. According to their statement, McCaffrey had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and he was surrounded by his friends and family at the time of his death on Sunday, December 18.
McCaffrey’s representative said to TMZ,
“One of Dick Wolf’s proteges, McCaffrey went on to a successful 35-year career in television and film. Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.”
Before TMZ’s coverage, it was Entourage star Kevin Dillon who honored his friend McCaffrey with a photo of the two of them on an Instagram post captioned – “RIP James McCaffrey we were lucky to have known you. my best friend you will be missed.”
While McCaffrey gained recognition primarily for his portrayal of the titular character in Max Payne and various roles in the Remedy Connected Universe, he also entertained audiences through his performances in television and film. Among his notable roles are Jimmy Keefe in Rescue Me, Julian Fiske in Beautiful People, as well as contributions to shows like As The World Turns and Swift Justice, among many others.
As for Remedy’s upcoming Max Payne reboots, we don’t yet know whether McCaffrey was involved in them. There have been no statements from Remedy regarding McCaffrey’s death so far. However, with this news officially out, we expect the developer team to make a statement soon, as they have worked with McCaffrey closely over the last few decades.
